Love has been renewed once more,

    though youth's powers are feeble.

So I fell in love, but attained no hope,

nor did I preserve my standing.

So whenever you hear of a lover,

    pray for lasting well-being.

I am indeed content simply to escape,

    with neither loss nor gain.

It was a mistake, and never—

    by God—will it happen again.

Enough for me is what happened in

the days of youth; it has sufficed me.

    Youth has gone, and only

    regrets for it remain.

My faults have shown themselves in love:

who will look on me with an approving eye?

O heart, how many a backward glance is yours,

    demanding its due from youth!

So wear your cast-off garment, for it is better

    than a new one borrowed.

And say, 'Peace be upon you,

    O people of that quarter!'

By your lives, by your lives,

    that affection still remains.
