أَماis it not آنَthe time has come لِلبَدرِfor the full moon المُنيرِradiant طُلوعُrising
فَتُشرِقَso that they may shine أَوطانٌhomelands لَهُbelonging to him وَرُبوعُand dwellings
Is it not time for the radiant full moon to rise,
Has not the time come for the bright full moon to rise
so that his homelands and dwellings may shine?
And illuminate the homelands and wildernesses?
فَياso, O غائِباًabsent one ماnot غابَwas absent إِلّاexcept بِوَجهِهِin his face
وَليand I have أَبَداًforever شَوقٌlonging لَهُfor him وَوَلوعُand passion
So, O absent one, whose face alone is absent,
So O absent one, nothing was absent but your face
my longing and passion for him are everlasting.
And I forever have a yearning and grief for you
I shall give thanks for حُبّاًa love زانَadorned فيكَfor you عِبادَتيmy worship
وَإِنand even if كانَwas فيهِin it ذِلَّةٌabasement وَخُضوعُand submission
I shall give thanks for a love of you that adorned my worship,
I will be thankful for the love that adorned my worship of you
even if it holds abasement and submission.
Though in it there was humiliation and submission
أُصَلّيI pray وَعِنديand I have لِلصَبابَةِfrom ardent longing رِقَّةٌtenderness
فَكُلُّso all صَلاتيmy prayer فيin هَواكَlove of you خُشوعُhumble reverence
I pray, and within me is the tenderness of ardent longing;
I pray and in my youth there is tenderness
so all my prayer, in loving you, is humble reverence.
So all my prayers are done in your love, in devotion
أَأَحبابَناO our beloved ones هَلis ...? ذَلِكَthat العَيشُlife عائِدٌreturning
كَماas كانَit was إِذwhen أَنتُمyou وَنَحنُand we جَميعُtogether
O our beloved ones, will that life return,
O my loved ones! Will that life return
as it was when you and we were all together?
As it was when you all and I together were?
وَقُلتُمand you said رَبيعٌspring مَوعِدُappointed time الوَصلِreunion بَينَناbetween us
فَهَذاso here is رَبيعٌa spring قَدalready مَضىhas passed وَرَبيعُand another spring
And you said, “Spring is our appointed time to reunite”;
You said, "Spring is the time we promised we'd reunite"
yet here a spring has passed, and another spring.
But now spring has passed and it is another spring
لَقَدindeed فَنِيَتhave run out ياهاجِرونَO you who forsake me رَسائِليmy letters
وَمَلَّand grew weary رَسولٌa messenger بَينَناbetween us وَشَفيعُand an intercessor
Indeed, my letters have run out, O you who forsake me,
My letters have been lost, O emigrants
and the messenger between us and the intercessor have grown weary.
And the messenger between us has grown weary and silent
فَلاso do not تَقرَعواstrike بِالعَتبِwith reproach قَلبيmy heart فَإِنَّهُfor it is
وَحَقِّكُمُby your honor مِثلُlike الزُجاجِglass صَديعُcracked
So do not strike my heart with reproach, for it is,
So do not tap at my heart with rebuke, for it
by your honor, cracked like glass.
Is as fragile as glass, easily shattered
سَأَبكيI shall weep وَإِنand if تَنزِفrun dry دُموعيmy tears عَلَيكُمfor you
بَكَيتُI shall weep بِشِعرٍwith verse رَقَّgrew tender فَهوَso it is دُموعُtears
I shall weep; and if my tears for you run dry,
I will cry though my tears bleed for you all
I shall weep with verse so tender that it is tears.
I cried in poetry that softened into tears
وَماand not ضاعَwas lost شِعريmy verse فيكُمُabout you حينَwhen قُلتُهُI uttered it
بَلىyes, indeed وَأَبيكُمby your father ضاعَwafted fragrance (pun: was lost) فَهوَand so it يَضوعُgives off fragrance
And my verse about you was not lost when I uttered it;
And my poetry was not lost on you when I recited it
yes, by your father, it gave off fragrance, and still gives off fragrance.
Yes, and without you it wanders lost, yearning
أُحِبُّI love البَديعَthe wondrous one الحُسنِin beauty مَعنىًin essence وَصورَةًand in form
وَشِعرِيَand my verse فيabout ذاكَthat البَديعِwondrous one بَديعُwondrous
I love the one of wondrous beauty, in essence and in form,
I love the beautiful elegance of meaning and imagery
and my verse about that wondrous one is wondrous.
And in that elegance my poetry is elegant
