I would give my life for مَنthe one who قَدindeed أَنجَزَتshe fulfilled وَعدَهاher promise
وَجَدَّدَتand she renewed فيin الحُبِّlove ليto me عَهدَهاher pledge
I would give my life for her who has fulfilled her promise,
I ransom the one who fulfilled her promise
And renewed her pledge to me in love.
And renewed for me her pact of love
وَقَلَّدَتنيand she bestowed on me فيin الهَوىpassionate love مِنَّةًa favor
ياoh شُكرَهاthanks to her مِنّيfrom me وَياand oh حَمدَهاpraise of her
And in passion has bestowed a favor upon me—
And conferred upon me in passion a favor
Oh, how I thank her, and how I praise her!
Oh, thank her I do and praise her
زائِرَةٌa female visitor لَمdid not أَدرِI know إِذwhen أَقبَلَتshe came
أَثَغرَهاwas it her mouth قَبَّلتُI kissed أَمor عِقدَهاher necklace
A visitor—when she came, I could not tell
A visitor whom when she approached
Whether I kissed her mouth or her necklace.
I knew not if her cheek or necklace I kissed
تَمنَعُنيshe prevents me from تَقبيلَkissing أَقدامِهاher feet
لَكِنَّهاbut she تَبذُلُoffers freely ليto me خَدَّهاher cheek
She prevents me from kissing her feet,
She refuses me to kiss her feet
But freely offers me her cheek.
Yet gives to me freely her cheek
حَسناءُa beautiful woman فيin الحُسنِbeauty لَهاhers is المُنتَهىthe utmost limit
لاnone قَبلَهاbefore her فيهِin it وَلاand none بَعدَهاafter her
A beauty: hers is the utmost perfection of beauty;
A beauty whose beauty has no bound
None before her in it, and none after her.
None before or after can match her
تُقَصِّرُfall short الأَلسُنُtongues عَنof وَصفِهاdescribing her
لَوeven if بالَغَتthey strove to the utmost وَاِستَغرَقَتand expended fully جُهدَهاtheir effort
Tongues fall short of describing her,
Tongues fall short describing her
Even if they strove to the utmost and spent all their effort.
Though they strive and exhaust their efforts
إِنَّindeed مَلوكاًMalūk مَلَكَتshe possessed مُهجَتيmy heart
لاnot تَدعُنيshe calls me إِلّاexcept بِياwith 'O' عَبدَهاher slave
Indeed, Malūk has taken possession of my heart;
Kings she has captured my heart
She calls me only, 'O slave of hers!'
Granting me no title but “oh her slave”
