تُرىI wonder هَلdo ...? عَلِمتُمyou have known ماwhat لَقيتُI have suffered مِنَfrom البُعدِseparation
لَقَدindeed جَلَّis immense ماwhat أُخفيهِI conceal it مِنكُمfrom you وَماand what أُبديI reveal
I wonder, do you know what I have suffered from separation?
Do you know what I have suffered from this distance?
Immense indeed is what I hide from you and what I reveal.
Much of what I concealed from you is now apparent.
فِراقٌparting وَوَجدٌand lovesickness وَاِشتِياقٌand longing وَلَوعَةٌand burning anguish
تَعَدَّدَتِhas multiplied البَلوىaffliction عَلىupon واحِدٍone person فَردِsolitary
Parting, lovesickness, longing, and burning anguish—
Parting, anguish, yearning, torment -
Afflictions have multiplied upon one solitary man.
Afflictions have multiplied upon this lone soul.
رَعىmay [He] cherish اللَهُGod أَيّاماًdays تَقَضَّتpassed بِقُربِكُمnear you
كَأَنّيas though I بِهاin them قَدindeed كُنتُI had been فيin جَنَّةِthe Garden of الخُلدِEternity
May God cherish the days that passed near you;
God nurtured days that passed with you near,
As though, in those days, I had been in the Garden of Eternity.
As though I lived with them in the eternal garden.
هَبونيsuppose me to be امرَأًa man قَدindeed كُنتُI had been بِالبَينِof parting جاهِلاًignorant
أَماnot? (interrogative) كانَthere was فيكُمamong you مَنsomeone who هَدانيguided me إِلىto الرُشدِright guidance
Suppose I had been a man ignorant of parting:
They abandoned a man who in separation was ignorant,
Was there no one among you to guide me aright?
Was there none among you to guide me to wisdom?
وَكُنتُand I was لَكُمfor you عَبداًa slave وَلِلعَبدِand for the slave حُرمَةٌa claim to respect
فَماso what بالُكُمis the matter with you ضَيَّعتُمُyou disregarded حُرمَةَthe respect due to العَبدِthe slave
And I was your slave, and a slave has a claim to respect;
I was your servant, and a servant has rights -
So why have you disregarded the respect due to your slave?
Why then did you neglect the rights of your servant?
وَماand what بالُis the matter with كُتبيmy letters لاnot يُرَدُّis sent back جَوابُهاtheir reply
فَهَلso, have ...? أُكرِمَتthey were honored أَنthat لاnot تُقابَلَbe met بِالرَدِّwith rejection; also, a reply
And why do my letters receive no reply?
Why do my letters go with no reply?
Have they been honored by being spared rejection?
Am I so honored as to be left with no response?
فَأَينَthen where حَلاواتُsweet delights الرَسائِلِthe letters بَينَناbetween us
وَأَينَand where أَماراتُsigns المَحَبَّةِlove وَالوُدِّand affection
Then where is the sweetness of the letters between us?
Where is the sweetness of messages between us?
And where are the signs of love and affection?
Where are the signs of love and affection?
وَماand not لِيَfor me ذَنبٌa fault يَستَحِقُّdeserves عُقوبَةًpunishment
وَياand oh لَيتَهاif only it كانَتwere بِشَيءٍwith something سِوىother than الصَدِّrejection
And I have no fault deserving punishment;
I have committed no wrong deserving of punishment -
And would that it were something other than rejection!
Would that it were anything but indifference!
وَياand oh لَيتَif only عِنديwith me كُلَّevery يَومٍday رَسولَكُمyour messenger
فَأُسكِنَهُthen I would lodge him عَينيmy eye وَأُفرِشَهُand make a bed for him خَدّيmy cheek
And would that your messenger were with me every day:
Would that I had your messenger each day,
Then I would lodge him in my eye and spread my cheek as his bed.
To rest my eyes upon and cradle my cheek!
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرعاكُمsurely cherish you عَلىin كُلِّevery حالَةٍcircumstance
وَحَقِّكُمُand by your due honor أَنتُمyou أَعَزُّdearest الوَرىall people عِنديto me
And I surely cherish you in every circumstance;
Truly, I hold you dear in every circumstance,
And by the honor due to you, you are the dearest of all people to me.
It is your due - you are the most precious souls to me.
عَليكُمupon you سَلامُpeace اللَهِof God وَالبُعدُand distance بَينَناbetween us
وَبِالرَغمِand against the will مِنّيof me أَنthat أُسَلِّمَI send greetings مِنfrom بُعدِafar
May God's peace be upon you, while distance lies between us;
God's peace be upon you, though we are apart,
And against my will I must greet you from afar.
And in spite of me, that I send greetings from afar.
