عَلَيَّincumbent on me وَعِنديand with me ماwhatever تُريدُyou desire مِنَof الرِضاsatisfaction
فَماso what لَكَwith you غَضباناًangry عَلَيَّat me وَمُعرِضاand turning away
I owe you, and have for you, all the satisfaction you desire.
I have what you want from contentment
So why are you angry with me and turning away?
So why are you angry with me and turning away?
وَياand O هاجِريyou who forsake me حاشاfar be it الَّذيthat which كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
مِنَof الوُدِّthe affection أَنthat يُنسىbe forgotten سَريعاًquickly وَيُنقَضاand be undone
And, O you who forsake me, far be it that what was between us
Oh you who departed, never should what was between us
of affection should be so quickly forgotten and undone.
Of affection be swiftly forgotten and nullified
حَبيبِيَmy beloved لاno وَاللَهِby God ماnot ليI have وَصيلَةٌa means of approach
إِلَيكَto you سِوىexcept الوُدُّthe affection الَّذيwhich قَدindeed تَمَحَّضاhas become pure
My beloved, no, by God, I have no means of approach
My beloved, no, by God, I have no connection to you
to you except the affection that has become wholly pure.
Except the love that has been purified
فَهَلso will زائِلٌpassing away ذاكَthat الصُدودُthe aversion الَّذيwhich أَرىI see
وَهَلand will عائِدٌreturning ذاكَthat الوِصالُthe union الَّذيwhich مَضىhas passed
So will that aversion I see pass away?
So will that estrangement I see vanish?
And will that bygone union return?
And will that past union return?
فَلَيتَكَso, if only you تَدريyou know كُلَّall ماthat which فيكَbecause of you حَلَّbefell بيupon me
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you تَرضىyou relent مَرَّةًonce فَتُعَوِّضاand so you make amends
If only you knew all that has befallen me because of you,
If only you knew all that has befallen me because of you
perhaps you would relent for once and make amends.
Perhaps you would be content for once and make amends
وَماand not بَرِحَceased الواشيthe slanderer لَناfrom us مُتَجَنَّباًkeeping away
فَلَمّاthen when رَأىhe saw الإِعراضَthe turning away مِنكَfrom you تَعَرَّضاhe intruded
And the slanderer had kept clear of us,
The slanderer did not cease speaking ill of us
then, when he saw you turn away, he intruded.
So when he saw your rejection, he was emboldened
وَإِنّيand I am indeed بِحُسنِin the goodness of الظَنِّthe opinion فيكَof you لَواثِقٌtruly confident
وَإِنand even if جَهِدَstrove hard الواشيthe slanderer فَقالَthen spoke وَحَرَّضاand incited
And I am steadfast in my good opinion of you,
Yet I am confident of your good faith
even if the slanderer strives, speaks, and provokes.
Even if the slanderer labored and incited
نُنَزِّهُwe keep unsullied سِرّاًa secret بَينَناbetween us وَنَصونُهُand we protect it
وَلوand even if كانَwere فيماin what بَينَناbetween us السَيفُthe sword مُنتَضىunsheathed
We keep a secret between us unsullied and protect it,
We keep our secret between us and protect it
even if the sword were drawn between us.
Even if there were swords drawn between us
وَليand I have كُلَّevery يَومٍday فَرحَةٌjoy فيin صَباحِهِits morning
عَسىperhaps الوَصلُreunion فيduring أَثنائِهِits course أَنthat يُقَيَّضاbe granted
And each day I find joy in the morning:
I have joy every morning
perhaps reunion will be granted in its course.
Hopeful that union will be ordained during it
أَظَلُّI remain نَهاريmy day كُلَّهُall of it مُتَشَوِّقاًyearning
لَعَلَّperhaps رَسولاًa messenger مِنكَfrom you يُقبِلُcomes بِالرِضاwith reconciliation
I spend my whole day yearning,
I spend my whole day longing
hoping a messenger from you will come bearing reconciliation.
Perhaps a messenger from you will come with favor
