عَشِقتُI loved بَدراًa full moon وَلاand not أُسَمّيI name
ماwhat شِئتُI wished قُلsay فيهِof him بَدرُa full moon تَمِّfullness
I loved a full moon, but will not name him.
I fell in love with the full moon but I do not name him
Say of him what I wish: a moon at the full.
Call him whatever you wish, say the full moon is complete
تَحَيَّرَwere bewildered العاذِلونَthe reproachers فيهِabout him
وَقالَand said كُلٌّeach one بِغَيرِwithout عِلمِknowledge
The reproachers were bewildered about him,
The blamers were confused by him
And each spoke without knowledge.
And each said without knowledge
وَأَكثَرَand increased الناسُthe people فيهِover him لَوماًreproach
وَقَلَّand was scant فيin الحُبِّlove فيهِwith him قِسميmy share
And people heaped reproach upon me over him,
Most people blamed him abundantly
Yet my share of love with him was scant.
And few cherished him like I did

لَمhas not يَتَّصِلjoined بِالسُعودِwith auspicious stars نَجميmy star
O moon, since you vanished from my sight,
O moon, since you disappeared from me
My star has not joined the stars of good fortune.
The auspicious star did not shine upon me
ياO أَحسَنَfinest العالَمينَof all beings خُلقاًin character
مِثلُكَone like you لاnot يَرتَضيconsents بِظُلميto my being wronged
O finest of all beings in character,
O the most perfect of creations in manners
One like you would not consent to my being wronged.
None like you will accept my injustice
أَماdo you not تَرىsee فيكَbecause of you ماwhat أُلاقيI endure
حاشاكَfar be it from you أَنto تَستَحِلَّdeem lawful إِثميa sin against me
Do you not see what I endure because of you?
Do you not see what I endure because of you
Far be it from you to deem wronging me lawful.
It is beneath you to allow my sin

أَأَشتَكيshall I complain قِصَّتيmy plight لِخَصميto my adversary
What is wrong with me—and where has my good sense gone?
What is wrong with me, where is reason
Shall I complain of my plight to my adversary?
Should I complain of my story to my adversary
