سَمِعتُI heard حَديثاًa conversation لَيتَنيif only I لَوhad حَضَرتُهُI attended it
فَتَسعَدَso that it might rejoice عَينيmy eye مِثلَماjust as سَعِدَتrejoiced أُذنيmy ear
I heard of a conversation—if only I had been present,
I heard a conversation, I wish I had attended
So my eye might rejoice as my ear rejoiced,
So my eyes would have delighted as my ears did
بِماat what كانَthere was مِنof ذِكرٍpraise جَميلٍgracious ذَكَرتُهُI recounted it
وَماand what كانَthere was مِنof مَنٍّfavor عَلَيَّupon me بِلاwithout مَنِّboastful reminders of favors
At the gracious praise I recounted,
With the beautiful mention that was made of me
And at the favor shown me without boastful reminders.
And the favor upon me though I am undeserving
فَياso, O أَيُّهاyou المَسرورُthe delighted one بِالأُنسِin companionship وَحدَهُhe alone
حَبيبُكَyour beloved فيin شَوقٍlonging إِلَيكَfor you وَفيand in حُزنِsorrow
So, O you who alone delight in companionship,
O you made happy by intimacy alone
Your beloved yearns for you and grieves.
Your beloved is longing for you and in sorrow
فَقُمso rise نَصطَلِحlet us reconcile لاlet not يَدخُلِenter الناسُpeople بَينَناbetween us
وَلاand let not يَبلُغِreach الواشينَthe talebearers عَنكَfrom you وَلاnor عَنّيfrom me
So rise, let us make peace; let no one come between us,
So let us reconcile, let no people come between us
And let no word from you or me reach the talebearers.
Nor informers reach you about me or me about you
كِلاناboth of us مُسيءٌat fault فيin تَجَنّيهِhis unjust accusations غالِطٌmistaken
فَماfor it is not حَسَنٌgood مِنكَfrom you الصُدودُturning away وَلاnor مِنّيfrom me
Both of us are at fault, mistaken in our unjust accusations.
We both erred in our withdrawal, both at fault
For turning away is not right for you, nor for me.
So your avoidance is not good nor mine
فَكَيفَso how جَرىcame about هَذاthis الجَفاءُestrangement الَّذيwhich أَرىI see
وَلَمand did not يَجرِoccur يَوماًever فيin اِعتِقاديmy belief وَلاnor ظَنّيmy expectation
So how did this estrangement I see come about,
How did this coldness I see occur
When I never once believed or expected it?
Never occurred in my belief or my thoughts
