أَناI بَينَbetween هِجرانٍabandonment وَبَينِand parting
How long, and until when,
How long, for how long
shall I remain between abandonment and parting?
Will I remain between estrangement and longing?

قُcompletion of 'separation' فَيالَهاso, what a plight it is! مِنof مِحنَتَينِtwo ordeals
Either rejection or separation—
Whether it is aloofness or separation
what a pair of ordeals!
What an ordeal between these two!
خَصمانِtwo foes ليto me أَناI مِنهُماbecause of them both
فيin شِدَّةٍhardship بَلrather شِدَّتَينِtwo hardships
Two foes of mine; because of them I am
I have two opponents
in hardship—rather, in two hardships.
In dire straits, nay double dire straits

I did not know what cause
I know not what the reason was
there had been between them both and me.
That existed between them and me

تُI (ending of 'I was created') كَمَنlike someone who يُطالِبُنيdemands payment from me بِدَينِfor a debt
They have clung to me since I was created,
They have accompanied me since I was created
like someone demanding repayment of a debt.
As one who demands a debt from me
ثُمَّthen اِستَمَرَّتcontinued حالَتيmy condition

Then my condition continued
Then my state persisted
as those two conditions endured.
With the continuity of those two states

And so it goes: still I remain—
And they dragged me forcibly, I have not stopped
my heart their captive, and my eye.
My heart being their prisoner and my eye

And man is terror-stricken
And the human is frightened
forever by those two sorrows.
Always by those two regrets

Before completing sixty
tasting the flavor of both partings.
He tastes the flavor of the two separations
