كَلَّمَنيhe spoke to me وَالمُدامُand the wine فيin فَمِهِhis mouth
قَدalready نَفَحَتwafted fragrance مِنfrom حَبابِthe bubbles of مَبسِمِهِhis smiling mouth
He spoke to me with wine in his mouth,
He talked to me, wine in his mouth,
Its fragrance had already wafted from the bubbles at his smiling lips.
Exhaling the scent of his radiant smile.
وَراحَand he went كَالغُصنِlike a branch فيin تَمايُلِهِhis swaying
سَكرانَdrunk يَشتَطُّhe goes to extremes فيin تَحَكُّمِهِhis domineering behavior
And he went swaying like a branch,
He swayed like a branch, lost in rapture,
Drunk, going to extremes in his domineering ways.
Drunk, beyond all self-control.
بِاللَهِby God ياO بَرقُlightning هَلwill تُحَدِّثُهُyou tell him
عَنof نارِthe fire of قَلبيmy heart وَعَنand of تَضَرُّمِهِits blazing
By God, O lightning, will you tell him
By God! Lightning, can you tell him
Of the fire in my heart and its blazing?
Of the fire in my heart, of my despair?
وَهَلand will نَسيمٌa breeze سَرىtraveled by night يُبَلِّغُهُconvey to him
رِسالَةًa message مِنfrom فَميmy mouth إِلىto فَمِهِhis mouth
And will a breeze drifting through the night convey to him
Can any breeze blow, bear to him
A message from my mouth to his?
A message from my mouth to his?
عَجِبتُI marveled مِنat بُخلِهِhis stinginess عَلَيَّtoward me وَماand what
يَذكُرُهُmention it الناسُpeople مِنof تَكَرُّمِهِhis generosity
I marveled at his stinginess toward me, and at what
I'm amazed at his stinginess toward me,
People say of his generosity.
When people speak of his generosity.
هُمthey عَلَّموهُthey taught him فَصارَso he began يَهجُرُنيhe shuns me
رَبِّmy Lord خُذِtake الحَقَّwhat is rightfully due مِنfrom مُعَلِّمِهِhis teacher
They taught him, and so he began to shun me.
They taught him, so he shuns me now.
My Lord, exact justice from his teacher.
Lord, take vengeance on his teacher!
