مِنfrom أَينَwhere ليfor me فيin حُبِّهِlove of him أَنthat أَرقُداI sleep
He made sleep the appointed time for union;
He stayed up to keep an appointment
how can I sleep while loving him?
How can I sleep while in love with him?
وَهُوَand he الحَبيبُthe beloved فَكيفَso how أَصبَحَhas become قاتِليmy killer

وَاللَهِby God لَوif كانَhe had been العَدُوُّthe enemy لَماthen not عَداhave gone further
And he is the beloved—how has he become my killer?
My beloved became my killer
By God, had he been my enemy, he would have gone no further.
By God if he were a foe, he would not have done so

How many blamed me and left while
no reproach reached my ears at dusk or dawn,
Blame never reached my ears or they left

In every upright, slender one, gently swaying
sweet of sway and front teeth, supple and graceful.
Sweetly bent, folding and unfolding

He resembles the sun in splendor and remoteness,
He recalls a gazelle, delightful and shy
and some say, the gazelle in eye and neck.
While some say, slender and counterfeit
وَكَذاكَand likewise قالواthey said الغُصنُthe bough يُشبِهُresembles قَدَّهُhis figure

Likewise they said a bough resembles his figure;
And so they said, the branch resembles his stature
O figure of his, may all boughs be your ransom!
Oh his stature, all branches are sacrificed for you

O archer who shoots my heart with the arrows of his glance,
Oh you who pierce my heart with the arrows of your glances
did you suppose my heart was hard stone, like yours?
Did you think my heart was like your frozen heart?

By love of you, were it not for the tyranny of love's decrees,
And I swear by your love, if not for the injustice of love's rule
my eye would not have spent the night sleepless for love of you.
My eyelid would not lie down enslaved by desire of you

And away with you, reproacher, from reproaching a love-stricken man!
And to you I complain about the blame of a lover
The reproachers never go to Tihamah without going to Najd.
For the complainant blames only the most ardent lover

Do you not see the mouth of the blossoms smiling
Do you not see the smile of flowers, delighted
for joy, and the naked boughs now clothed?
And the bare branches have worn clothes?

The clouds stood bewildered over the hills,
The clouds stopped over the meadows, confused
and the breeze walked fettered over the gardens.
The breeze walked through the gardens fettered

And the veiled face of day fills me with longing,
Your veiled face in daylight allure me
and the rose-tinted cheek of late afternoon delights me.
Your blushing cheek in the darkness delight me

And it is as though the breaths of the breeze, when they drift,
As if the sighing breeze gives thanks
thank our lord Majd al-Din for his generous hand.
For the glory of our master, benefactor of all

A lord whose renown is freely spread among the people,
A master whose fame is disseminated among all people
and whose bounty the clouds recount with a chain of transmission from him.
His dew nurtured by clouds, supported

His palm is accustomed to bounty and the sword;
The dew befriended the sword, resting in his palm
so there they are, one Arabized, the other Indian-forged.
As if it were Arabic script and Indian steel

And when he mounts his steed, it is as though he were
When he rides his steed it is as if
a thirsty man who has taken the Milky Way for a watering place.
He is a star and the galaxy is his pasture

There he makes the reins his prayer beads,
He gave the reins to it there as an orb
and the well-built steed's saddle becomes his mosque.
And its saddlecloth became his prayer mat

A lord who began, unasked, with gifts that
A master who gives freely without being asked
fulfilled hopes through generosity; he gave again as he began.
He attained his wishes through generosity and returned as he began

And he bestowed bounty such as no cloud could grant
He attains a generosity that not even the clouds attain
on any day, even if that cloud were the most generous.
On any day, though the clouds are the most generous

And when a caller for help summons them to a calamity,
And when the battle cry calls them to the fray
they make the clang of keen-edged swords an echo to his call.
They make the neighing of the swift steeds an echo

may your edge never be blunted, as lord and builder!
Neither does the West outrank you as master and builder

You have irrefutable proof in the highest pursuits
for an opponent, and a path that cannot be found.
An argument that cannot be disputed or guided
