    He disclaimed blame for what had happened and apologized,

    and bowed his head, cloaked in bashfulness.

    So I hastened to the dust on which he had walked,

    to kiss the traces of his feet.

    And I rose and said to him: Welcome!

    And a warm welcome to this moon!

    My beloved, you are above any lapse

    needing pardon, or any slip needing forgiveness.

    ةُ فَتِلكَ الأَقاويلُ فيها نَظَر

    So spare me what the slanderers say;

    for those tales are open to question.

    تَ فَلَيسَ العِيانُ كَمِثلِ الخَبَر

    And what you have seen of me is enough for you;

    for seeing firsthand is not like hearing a report.

    Then he said: How long will you endure suffering

    and strut in the robe of this peril?

    فَمِنكَ الرِياحُ وَمِنكَ المَطَر

    You stirred up passion, then weep in sorrow;

    for from you come the winds, and from you the rain.

    So, my friend, you have heard the tale,

    and now you have knowledge of it.

    And you were present at what happened,

    and after you left, other things came to pass.

    فَلا تُخلِني مِن جَميلِ النَظَر

    And I rely on none but you;

    so do not deprive me of your kindly regard.

    Perhaps you will cherish the affection of old,

    and keep youth’s covenant in old age.
