عَليكَupon you سَلامُpeace اللَهِof God ياO قَبرَgrave of عُثمانِUthman
وَحَيّاكَand may it greet you عَنّيon my behalf كُلُّevery روحٍrefreshing breeze وَرَيحانِand fragrant herb
God's peace be upon you, O grave of Uthman.
And may every refreshing breeze and fragrant herb greet you on my behalf.
وَلازالَand may it never cease مُنهَلّاًpouring down عَلىupon تُربِكَyour dust الحَياthe rain
يُغاديكَvisits you each morning مِنهُwith it كُلُّevery أَوطَفَlow-hanging cloud هَتّانِdownpouring
And may rain never cease pouring upon your dust;
may every low-hanging, downpouring cloud visit you with it each morning.
لَقَدindeed خُنتُهُI betrayed him فيin الوُدِّaffection إِذwhen عِشتُI lived بَعدَهُafter him
وَماand not كُنتُI was فيin وُدِّaffection for الصَديقِa friend بِخَوّانِat all treacherous
I have indeed betrayed him in love by living after him,
though I was never false in my love for a friend.
وَعَهديand my recollection بِصَبريof my patience فيin الخُطوبِcalamities يُطيعُنيit obeys me
فَماso why ليfor me أَراهُI see it اليَومَtoday أَظهَرَhas shown عِصيانيdefiance of me
And I used to find my patience obedient in calamities;
why, then, do I see it openly defying me today?
فَياso O ثاوِياًone resting here قَدindeed طَيَّبَhas made sweet اللَهُGod ذِكرَهُhis memory
فَأَضحىand so he came to be وَطيبُwhile sweetness of الذِكرِremembrance عُمرٌa lifetime لَهُfor him ثانِa second
So, O you who lie here, whose memory God has made sweet,
now the sweetness of remembrance is a second life for him.
وَجَدتَyou have found الَّذيthat which أَسلاكَconsoled you عَنّيfor my absence وَإِنَّنيwhile I indeed
وَحَقِّكَand by your honor ماnot حَدَّثتُI spoke to نَفسيmyself بِسُلوانِof consolation
You have found what consoles you in my absence, while I,
by your honor, have never thought of consolation.
وَعُوِّضتَand you were compensated عَنin place of دارٍa dwelling بِأَكنافِwith the sheltering reaches of جَنَّةٍParadise
وَعُوِّضتَand you were compensated عَنin place of أَهلٍfamily بُحورٍwith houris وَوِلدانِand youths
And in place of a dwelling, you were given the shelter of Paradise,
and in place of family, you were given houris and youths.
I would give my life for الَّذيthe one whom فيin حُبِّهِloving him اِتَّفَقَagreed الوَرىall people
فَلَوso if سُئِلواthey were asked لَمnot يَختَلِفwould disagree مِنهُمُamong them اثنانِtwo people
I would give my life for him whom all people agreed to love;
for if they were asked, no two among them would disagree.
لَقَدindeed دَفَنَburied الأَقوامُthe people يَومَon the day of وَفاتِهِhis death
بَقِيَّةَthe remnant of مَعروفٍkindness وَخَيرٍand goodness وَإِحسانِand beneficence
On the day of his death, the people indeed buried
the last remnant of kindness, goodness, and beneficence.
وَواراهُand buried him وَالذِكرىwhile memory تُمَثِّلُconjures up شَخصَهُhis form
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they وارَوهُburied him ماthe space بَينَbetween أَجفانيmy eyelids
And he was buried, while memory conjures up his form,
as though they had buried him between my eyelids.
يُواجِهُنيfaces me أَينَwherever اتَّجَهتَyou turn خَيالُهُhis image
كَماjust as كُنتُI used to أَلقاهُmeet him قَديماًformerly وَيَلقانيand he meets me
His image faces me wherever you turn,
just as I used to meet him long ago, and he would meet me.
وَأُقسِمُand I swear لَوif نادَيتُهُI called him وَهوَwhile he is مَيِّتٌdead
لَجاوَبَنيhe would surely answer me تَحتَbeneath التُرابِthe earth وَلَبّانيand answer my call
And I swear, if I called to him, though he is dead,
he would surely answer me beneath the earth and respond to my call.
هَنيئاًbliss لَهُto him قَدindeed طابَwas sweet حَيّاًalive وَمَيِّتاًand dead
فَماso not كانَhe was مُحتاجاًin need لِتَطيِيبِfor perfuming أَكفانِshrouds
Blessed is he: he was sweet in life and in death,
so he had no need for his shrouds to be perfumed.
صَديقيmy friend الَّذيwho مُذsince ماتَhe died ماَتَتdied مَسَرَّتيmy joy
فَماthen why لِيَfor me لاnot أَبكيهِI weep for him وَالرُزءُwhen the loss رُزآنِtwo losses
My friend—since he died, my joy has died.
Why, then, should I not weep for him, when my loss is twofold?
وَكانَand he was أَنيسيmy comforting companion مُذsince بُليتُI was afflicted بِغُربَةٍwith being far from home
وَكُنتُand I was كَأَنّيas though I were بَينَamong أَهليmy family وَأَوطانيand my homelands
And he was my companion ever since I suffered life far from home,
and I felt as though I were among my family and in my native lands.
وَقَدand indeed كانَhe had أَسلانيmade me forget عَنِabout الناسِpeople كُلِّهِمall of them
وَلاand no أَحَدٌone عَنهُabout him مِنَamong الناسِthe people أَسلانيhas made me forget
And he had made me forget all other people,
yet no one among them has made me forget him.
كَريمُnoble المُحَيّاof countenance باسِمٌsmiling مُتَهَلِّلٌbeaming
مَتىwhenever جِئتُهُI came to him لَمnot تَلقَهُyou would find him غَيرَother than جَذلانِjoyful
Noble of countenance, smiling and radiant,
whenever I came to him, you would find him nothing but joyful.
يَمُنُّhe bestows favors لِمَنon whoever يَرجوهُlooks to him مِنwith غَيرِno مِنَّةٍreproach over favors
فَإِنso if قُلتَyou say مَنّانٌa lavish giver فَقُلthen say غَيرَnot مَنّانِone who reproaches for favors
He bestows favors on whoever looks to him, without reproach.
So if you call him a giver of favors, say he never reproaches anyone for them.
فَقَدتُI lost حَبيباًa beloved friend وَاِبتُليتُand I was afflicted بِغُربَةٍwith being far from home
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you مِنof هَذَينِthese two أَمرانِtwo ordeals مُرّانِboth bitter
I lost a beloved friend and suffered life far from home;
and these two are enough for you: two bitter ordeals.
وَماand not كُنتُI was عَنهُaway from him أَملِكُI could muster الصَبرَpatience ساعَةًan hour
فَماthen how كانَwas أَقسانيso hard-hearted I was عَلَيهِtoward him وَأَقصانيand so distant I was
And I could not bear being away from him for an hour;
how hard-hearted toward him, then, and how distant I was!
هُوَit is المَوتُdeath ماno فيهِin it وَفاءٌloyalty لِصاحِبٍto a friend
وَهَيهاتَand how unlikely إِنسانٌa person يَموتُdies لِإِنسانِfor a person
It is death: there is no loyalty in it to a friend.
And how unlikely it is that one person should die for another!
كَذَلِكَthus مازالَhave always been الزَمانُtime وَأَهلُهُand its people
فَمِنso from قَبلِناbefore us كَمhow many قَدindeed تَفَرَّقَparted إِلفانِtwo dear companions
This is how time and its people have always been;
for how many pairs of dear companions parted before us!
وَماand not الناسُpeople إِلّاexcept راحِلٌa departing traveler بَعدَafter راحِلٍa departing traveler
إِلىto العَلَمِthe landmark الباقيenduring مِنَfrom العالَمِthe world الفانيperishing
And people are but one traveler after another,
to the enduring landmark from the perishing world.
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَأَينَthen where الناسُthe people مِنfrom عَهدِthe time of آدَمٍAdam
وَمِنand from عَهدِthe time of نوحٍNoah ثُمَّthen مِنهُfrom it إِلىuntil الآنِnow
Otherwise, where are the people from Adam's time,
and from Noah's time, then from that time until now?
