رُوَيدَكَtake it slowly قَدalready أَفنَيتَyou have exhausted ياO بَينُseparation أَدمُعيmy tears
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you قَدalready أَضنَيتَyou have worn down ياO شَوقُlonging أَضلُعيmy ribs
Gently now—you have exhausted my tears, O separation.
And enough—you have worn down my ribs, O longing.
إِلىuntil كَمhow long أُقاسيI endure فُرقَةًparting بَعدَafter فُرقَةٍparting
وَحَتّىand until مَتىwhen ياO بَينُseparation أَنتَyou مَعيwith me مَعيwith me
For how long must I endure parting after parting?
And how long, O separation, will you remain with me, with me?
لَقَدindeed ظَلَمَتنيit wronged me وَاِستَطالَتand overreached يَدُhand النَوىdistance
وَقَدand already طَمِعَتit coveted فيin جانِبيmy side كُلَّevery مَطمَعِcovetous desire
Indeed, the hand of distance has wronged me and overreached,
And has coveted me in every possible way.
فَلاso may not كانَexist مَنwhoever قَدalready عَرَّفَshowed البَينَseparation مَوضِعيmy whereabouts
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI had been مِنهُfrom it فيin جَنابٍa refuge مُمَنَّعِimpregnable
So may whoever revealed my whereabouts to separation be no more!
Indeed, I had been in a refuge impregnable to it.
فَياso O راحِلاًdeparting one لَمnot أَدرِI knew كَيفَhow رَحيلُهُhis departure
لِماbecause of what راعَنيalarmed me مِنof خَطبِهِhis calamity المُتَسَرِّعِprecipitous
So, O departing one, I knew not how he departed,
For the sudden calamity of his leaving had so alarmed me.
يُلاطِفُنيhe treats me gently بِالقَولِwith words عِندَat وَداعِهِhis farewell
لِيُذهِبَto remove عَنّيfrom me لَوعَتيmy burning anguish وَتَفَجُّعيand my lamentation
He spoke gently to me as he bade farewell,
To dispel my burning anguish and my lamentation.
وَلَمّاand when قَضىcarried out التَوديعُfarewell فيناupon us قَضاءَهُits decree
رَجَعتُI returned وَلَكِنand yet لاdo not تَسَلask كَيفَhow مَرجِعيmy return
And when farewell had carried out its decree upon us,
I returned—but do not ask how I returned.
فَياso O عَينِيَmy eye العَبرىtearful عَلَيَّover me فَأَسكِبيso pour forth
وَياand O كَبِديmy liver الحَرّىburning عَليهِمfor them تَقَطَّعيtear yourself apart
So, O my tearful eye, pour your tears over me,
And, O my burning liver, tear yourself apart for them.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod ذاكَthat الوَجهَface خَيرَthe best of جَزائِهِHis reward
وَحَيَّتهُand may it greet him عَنّيon my behalf الشَمسُthe sun فيat كُلِّevery مَطلَعِrising
May God grant that face His finest reward,
And may the sun greet him on my behalf at every rising.
وَيارَبَّand O Lord جَدِّدrenew كُلَّماwhenever هَبَّتِblows الصَباthe east wind
سَلاميmy greeting عَلىto ذاكَthat الحَبيبِthe beloved المُوَدَّعِbidden farewell
And, O Lord, renew, whenever the east wind blows,
My greeting to that beloved to whom I bade farewell.
قِفواpause بَعدَناafter us تَلقَواyou will find مَكانَthe place حَديثِناour conversation
لَهُit has أَرَجٌa fragrance كَالعَنبَرِlike ambergris المُتَضَوِّعِexuding fragrance
Pause after we are gone; you will find that the place where we spoke
Has a fragrance like ambergris spreading its scent.
فَيَعلَقَso it clings فيin أَثوابِكُمyour garments مِنfrom تُرابِهِits dust
شَذاthe scent المِسكِmusk مَهماhowever often يُغسَلِis washed الثَوبُthe garment يَسطَعِwafts forth
So from its dust there will cling to your garments
The scent of musk; however often the garment is washed, it still wafts forth.
أَأَحبابَناO our beloved ones لَمnot أَنسَكُمI have forgotten you وَحَياتِكُمby your lives
وَماand not كانَwas عِنديwith me وُدُّكُمyour love بِمُضَيَّعِat all neglected
O our beloved ones, I have not forgotten you—by your lives!
Nor was your love ever neglected in my keeping.
عَتَبتُمyou reproached فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God ماnot خُنتُI betrayed عَهدَكُمyour pledge
وَماand not كُنتُI was فيin ذاكَthat الوَدادِlove بُمِدَّعيat all a pretender
You reproached me—but no, by God, I have not broken faith with you.
Nor was I a pretender in that love.
وَقُلتُمand you said عَلِمناwe know ماwhat جَرىhappened مِنكَfrom you كُلَّهُall of it
فَلاso do not تَظلِمونيwrong me ماnot جَرىflowed غَيرَexcept أَدمُعيmy tears
And you said, 'We know all that has come from you.'
So do not wrong me; nothing has flowed but my tears.
كَماas قُلتُمُyou said يَهنيكَmay it please you نَومُكَyour sleep بَعدَناafter us
وَمِنand from أَينَwhere نَومٌsleep لِلكَئيبِfor the sorrowful one المُرَوَّعِterror-stricken
As you said, 'May you enjoy your sleep after we are gone!'
And where can the sorrowful, terror-stricken find sleep?
إِذاwhen كُنتُI am يَقظاناًawake أَراكُمI see you وَأَنتُمُand you
مُقيمونَdwelling فيin قَلبيmy heart وَطَرفيand my eye وَمِسمَعيand my ear
When I am awake, I see you, and you are
Dwelling in my heart, my eye, and my ear.
فَماso what لِيَwith me حَتّىthat أَطلُبَI seek النَومَsleep فيin الهَوىlove
أَقولُI say لَعَلَّperhaps الطَيفَthe dream-vision يَطرُقُvisits by night مَضجَعيmy bed
Why, then, do I seek sleep in love?
I say, 'Perhaps the dream-vision will visit my bed by night.'
مَلَأتُمyou have filled فُؤاديmy heart فيin الهَوىlove فَهوَso it مُترَعٌbrimming
وَلاand may not كانَexist قَلبٌa heart فيin الهَوىlove غَيرَother than مُترَعِbrimming
You have filled my heart with love, so it is brimming;
And may no heart in love be anything but brimming.
وَلَمand not يَبقَremains فيهِin it مَوضِعٌa place لِسِواكُمُfor anyone but you
وَمَنand who ذاthe one الَّذيwho يَأويtakes shelter إِلىto غَيرِother than مَوضِعِa place
And no room remains in it for anyone but you,
And who would take shelter where there is no room?
لَحىmay rebuke اللَهُGod قَلبيmy heart هَكَذاlike this هُوَit لَمnot يَزَلceased
يَحِنُّit yearns وَيَصبوand pines لاnot يَفيقُcomes to its senses وَلاnor يَعيunderstands
May God rebuke my heart! It has always been this way:
It yearns and pines, neither coming to its senses nor understanding.
فَلاso not عاذِليmy reproacher يَنفَكُّwithdraws عَنِّيَfrom me إِصبَعاًa finger's breadth
وَقَدand already وَقَعَتbecame caught فيin رَزَّةِlatch-ring الحِبِّthe beloved إِصبَعيmy finger
So my reproacher never draws a finger's breadth away from me,
And my finger has become caught in the beloved's latch-ring.
لَئِنif indeed كانَthere is لِلعُشّاقِfor lovers قَلبٌa heart مُصَرَّعٌlaid low
فَماthen not كانَwas فيهِمamong them مَصرَعٌa downfall مِثلُlike مَصرَعيmy downfall
If indeed among lovers there is a heart laid low,
Then no downfall among them has ever been like mine.
