مِنَfrom اليَومِtoday تَعارَفناwe came to know one another
وَنَطويand we fold away ماجَرىwhat happened مِنّاfrom us
From today, we know one another,
From today let's make amends
and fold away what we have done.
And forget what's passed between us
وَلاand not كانَwas وَلاand not صارَcame to pass
وَلاand not قُلتُمyou said وَلاand not قُلناwe said
And nothing happened, nothing came to pass,
As if naught occurred or was said
and neither you nor we said a word.
By you or me, come what may
وَإِنand if كانَthere is وَلاand no بُدٌّescape
مِنَfrom العَتبِreproach فَبِالحُسنىthen with kindness
And if there is no avoiding
And if some reproach is due
reproach, then let it be kindly.
Let it be with gracious words
فَقدfor indeed قيلَit was said لَناto us عَنكُمabout you
كَماjust as قيلَit was said لَكُمto you عَنّاabout us
For things have been said to us about you,
For just as some told of you
just as things have been said to you about us.
So they told of me untrue
كَفىenough ماwhat كانَwas مِنof هَجرٍestrangement
وَقدand indeed ذُقتُمyou tasted وَقَدand indeed ذُقناwe tasted
Enough of the estrangement there has been;
Enough of estrangement and woe
and you have tasted it, and so have we.
You've tasted it, and so have I
وَماand how أَحسَنَlovely أَنto نَرwe re- (first part of 'we return')
جِعَ-turn (completes 'we return') لِلوَصلِto union كَماas كُنّاwe were
And how lovely it would be to re-
How sweet it would be to go
turn to union, as we once were.
Back to the love we used to know
