    أَنا الَّذي مُتُّ حَقّا

    May you live and endure;

    I am the one who has truly died.

    Far be it from you, O light of my eye,

    to suffer what I suffer.

    What I have done is done,

    and God is better and more enduring.

    And I found, between my death

    and your abandonment, no difference.

    O most carefree of people,

    how long must I suffer over you?

    يا رَبِّ لا كانَ صِدقا

    I heard a report about you;

    O Lord, may it not be true!

    Far be it from you to break faith with me,

    while my bond with you is unshakable.

    And I have known you only

    as one of the noblest people in character.

    يا أَلفَ مَولايَ رِفقا

    O my lord a thousandfold, be gentle;

    O my lord a thousandfold, be kind.

    Life is yours, for I

    am dying, without doubt, of love.

    Nothing remains of me but

    a remnant that will not last.
