سَلواask الرَكبَthe caravan إِنif وافىcomes مِنَfrom الغَورِal-Ghawr نَحوَكُمtoward you
يُخَبِّركُمُit will tell you عَنabout لَوعَتيmy burning anguish وَرَسيسيand my lingering passion
Ask the caravan, should it come toward you from al-Ghawr;
It will tell you of my anguish and my lingering passion—
حَديثاًa tale بِهِthrough it أَبقَيتُI left behind فيin الرَكبِthe caravan نَشوَةًintoxication
وَقَدand already أَسكَرَتهُمhad made them drunk خَمرَتيmy wine وَكُؤوسيand my cups
A tale with which I left the caravan in rapture,
For my wine and my cups had made them drunk.
فَلاso do not تَبعَثواsend ليto me فيupon النَسيمِthe breeze تَحِيَّةًa greeting
فَيَرتابُlest he grow suspicious مِنbecause of طيبِthe fragrance of النَسيمِthe breeze جَليسيmy companion
So send me no greeting upon the breeze,
Lest the breeze's fragrance make my companion suspicious.
فَليfor I have عَنto يَمينِthe right of الغَورِal-Ghawr دارٌa home عَهَدتُنيI remember myself
أَميلُI am drawn لِأَقمارٍto moons بِهاwithin it وَشُموسِand suns
For I have a home to the right of al-Ghawr, where I remember
Being drawn to the moons and suns within it.
عَلىfor مِثلِهاthe like of it يَبكيweeps المُحِبُّthe lover صَبابَةًwith longing
فَياso, O مُقلَتيmy eye لاno عِطرَperfume بَعدَafter عَروسِʿArūs (a name)
For such a home the lover weeps with longing;
So, O my eye, no perfume after ʿArūs!
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَتَعرونيsurely overtakes me مَعَwith اللَيلِthe night لَوعَةٌa burning anguish
فُؤادِيَmy heart مِنهاbecause of it فيin لَظاًblazing fire وَوَطيسِand a furnace
And with the night, a burning anguish surely overtakes me;
My heart, because of it, lies in flame and furnace.
تَلوحُgleam نُجومٌstars لاnot أَراهاI see them أَحِبَّتيmy loved ones
وَيَطلَعُand rises بَدرٌa full moon لاnot أَراهُI see it أَنيسيmy intimate companion
Stars gleam, but I do not see them as my loved ones;
And a full moon rises, but I do not see it as my companion.
حَلَفتُI swore لَكُمto you يَومَon the day of النَوىparting وَحَلَفتُمُand you swore
بِكُلِّby every يَمينٍoath لِلمُحِبِّfor the lover غَموسِplunging into ruin
I swore to you on the day of parting, and you swore,
By every oath that plunges a lover into ruin.
وَكُنتُمand you had وَعَدتُمpromised فيon الخَميسِThursday بِزَورَةٍa visit
وَكَمand how many مِنof (emphatic) خَميسٍa Thursday قَدalready مَضىhas passed وَخَميسِand another Thursday
And you had promised a visit on Thursday;
And how many a Thursday has passed—and another Thursday!
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرضىam surely content with كُلَّall ماthat which تَرتَضونَهُyou approve of it
فَإِنso if يُرضِكُمpleases you بُؤسيmy misery رَضيتُI am content بِبوسيwith my misery
And I am indeed content with all that pleases you;
So if my misery pleases you, I am content with my misery.
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that ليI have نَفساًa soul عَلَيَّto me عَزيزَةًprecious
وَفيand among الناسِpeople عُشّاقٌlovers بِغَيرِwithout نُفوسِsouls
Yet I have a soul that is precious to me,
While among people are lovers without souls.
