قالواthey said فُلانٌso-and-so قَدalready غَداbecame تائِباًrepentant
وَاليَومَand today قَدalready صَلّىhe prayed مَعَwith الناسِthe people
They said, “So-and-so has repented,
and today he prayed with the people.”
قُلتُI said مَتىwhen ذاكَthat وَأَنّىand how لَهُfor him
وَكَيفَand how يَنسىhe forgets لَذَّةَpleasure الكاسِthe cup
I said, “When was that? And how could he?
And how could he forget the pleasure of the cup?
أُمسِyesterday بِهَذيwith this العَينِthe eye أَبصَرتُهُI saw him
سَكرانَdrunk بَينَamong الوَردِthe roses وَالآسِand the myrtle
Yesterday, with this very eye, I saw him
drunk among roses and myrtle.”
وَرُحتُand I went عَنabout تَوبَتِهِhis repentance سائِلاًinquiring
وَجَدتُهاI found it تَوبَةَrepentance إِفلاسِbankruptcy
And I went to inquire about his repentance;
I found it repentance born of bankruptcy.
