How long shall I remain in the lands of a people

where their lions and their dogs have become equals?

And I adorned them with precious pearls, yet these are—

by your life—something their necks did not recognize.

And the world has never grown too narrow for a person of honor,

nor are its open spaces barred to him.

For my ambition has already brought me glad tidings of happiness,

and a letter from the heights has come to me.
