ياO مَنthe one whom أُفارِقُهُI part from him عَلىagainst رُغميmy will
هَذاthis بِحُكمِby the decree of اللَهِGod لاnot حُكميmy decree
O you whom I leave against my will,
This is God's decree, not mine.
مِنfrom أَينَwhere قُدِّرَwas decreed الفِراقُparting لَناfor us
لَمdid not يَجرِpass فيin خَلَديmy mind وَلاnor وَهميmy imagination
How did parting come to be decreed for us?
It never entered my mind or my imagination.
أَناI بِالفِراقِby parting مُرَوَّعٌterror-stricken أَبَداًforever
ذاthis طالِعيmy ascendant فيهِin it وَذاand this نَجميmy star
I am forever terror-stricken by parting;
Such is my ascendant in parting, and such my star.
ماnot هَذِهِthis لِلبَينِfor parting أَوَّلَةٌa first occurrence
ذاthis الخَدُّcheek مِنهُfrom it مُعَوَّدُaccustomed to اللَطمِslapping
This is not the first parting;
This cheek is accustomed to its slaps.
لاnot أَشتَكيI complain of الأَيّامَthe days أَظلِمُهاI wrong them
هِيَthey ماnot جَرَتproceeded إِلّاexcept عَلىaccording to رَسميmy accustomed course
I do not complain of the days—that would wrong them;
They have only followed my accustomed course.
وَحَديثُand the talk of مَنone who يُبديdisplays الشَماتَةَgloating بيover me
قَدindeed زادَنيhas added to me هَمّاًsorrow عَلىupon هَمِّsorrow
And the talk of one who openly gloats over me
Has added sorrow upon sorrow for me.
