    Repeat the message once again,

    and receive the answer openly.

So perhaps, with the talk repeated

to me, I may forget what ails me.

And perhaps you may quench, born of the burning thirst

    of longing, a blazing fire.

Then, when you return with greetings,

    begin by returning my greeting.

And say: Peace be upon you,

    people of the lofty palaces.

    And repeat, with gracious tact,

my reply, just as you have learned it:

O my captor—no, you who leave me

    in anguish—and what anguish!

    Why do your letters to

others always come one after another?

And when you write, perhaps you might remember

me, if only in the margin.

Do not forget what lies between me and

    you: pledges that still endure.

By God, who is this one

to whom you give my place with you?

Far be it from you to accept that I pass the night

while you remain far away from me.
