Leave the slanderers, what they said, and what they spread.

Between you and me is a bond that cannot be severed.

    لا الكُتبُ تَنفَعُني فيها وَلا الرُسُلُ

    Secrets for you lie hidden in my heart;

neither letters nor messengers can help me with them.

I have letters of longing that, were I to send them

to you, the roads and pathways could not contain them.

I reach evening and morning with longings toying with me,

as though I were a drinker made drunk by them.

And I savor a breeze from your dwellings,

as though its breaths were kisses of your fragrance.

How often I burden my heart, in loving you,

with what no heart can bear—yet it bears it.

How often I urge it to endure your absence and rebuke it,

but rebuke is of no use to a lover.

Alas for a lovesick man with few to help him

in loving you, while plain and mountain close in on him.

My case in love, by God, is perplexing.

What can be said? What counsel, what plan, what action?

    إِنَّ المَليحَةَ فيها يَحسُنُ الغَزَلُ

    My poetry grows more beautiful when I mention you;

indeed, love verse about a beautiful woman is beautiful.

O absent ones, whom I behold within my heart:

whenever they part from my sight, they draw close.

Distance has renewed their nearness in my heart,

as though they had joined me on the day of parting.

I am faithful to my loved ones, even if they betray me.

I remain true to my pledge, even if they depart.

I am the lover—treachery is not in my nature.

Far is my character from it; I do not change.

So, my messenger to the one whose name I do not reveal,

it is in weighty tasks that a man's worth is known.

Convey my greeting, and address him earnestly,

and kiss the ground on my behalf when you arrive.

By God, tell him of my condition if you are alone with him,

but do not speak at length, for my beloved tires easily.

That is the greatest request I make of you; if

you succeed, my appeal to you and my hope will not have been in vain.

In my affairs, whenever they arise, I have always

relied, after God, on your care.

In any undertaking you attempt, there is in you

—praise be to God—neither weakness nor sloth.

    وَالخَيرُ يُذكَرُ وَالأَخبارُ تَنتَقِلُ

    For people depend on people, and life is reciprocity;

good deeds are remembered, and news travels.

A person finds a way when his aims are hard to attain,

and stratagems sometimes benefit those who use them.

O you for whom my words are meant, if you listen,

you will find words containing whatever you desire:

love verse whose tenderness enchants the mind,

its substance radiant wisdom or a proverb.

A beautiful woman's beauty is enough for her,

especially when she wears jewels and fine robes.

Abandon delay in any undertaking you intend,

for the turning of the nights races swiftly ahead.

You have squandered your life; grieve, if you realize it,

for life has neither recompense nor replacement.

    فَكَم تَقَلَّبَتِ الأَيّامُ وَالدُوَلُ

    Race ahead of your time, for fear of its reversals;

how often days and fortunes have turned!

Be resolved whenever you wish, for all times are alike:

neither delay nor haste wards off what is decreed.

Do not watch the stars in any undertaking you attempt,

for God acts—not Capricorn or Aries.

    فَلا يَغُرُّكَ مِرّيخٌ وَلا زُحَلُ

    With good fortune, the stars have no influence;

so do not let Mars or Saturn deceive you.

    وَالشَرعُ يَصدُقُ وَالإِنسانُ يَمتَثِلُ

    The matter is greater than this, and thought is bewildered;

sacred law speaks truth, and humankind obeys.
