إِنَّindeed رُشدَsound judgment المُحِبِّthe lover غَيَّfolly
Do not press me further over love;
Do not increase your love for me,
indeed, a lover's wisdom is folly.
Indeed, the sanity of a lover is lost.
كَيفَhow أُخفيI conceal الهَوىlove وَقَدand already
خَرَجَhas slipped الأَمرُthe matter مِنfrom يَدَيَّmy two hands
How can I conceal my love, when
How can I hide this love when
the matter has slipped from my hands?
The matter has gone out of my hands?
أَناI فيin الحُبِّlove مَيِّتٌdead
وَعَذوليand my reprover يَقولُsays حَيَّalive
I am dead in love,
I am dead in love,
yet my reprover says I am alive.
Yet my own self says I'm alive.

بَعدُstill فيin النَفسِthe soul مِنهُof it شَيَّsomething
I have a passion dating from youth;
I have a passion from youth
something of it still lingers in my soul.
That still stirs deep within me.
وَحبيبِand a beloved فَلاso do not تَسَلask

And a beloved—do not ask
As for my love, do not ask
what haughtiness is his—what haughtiness!
Which loss bewilders him, which does not.

A sun of beauty, whose
He is a sun of beauty whose
hair gives him unfailing shade.
Shadow of hair falls over me.

And one who wrongs me, as though he
And he who is unkind is as though
were always doing me good.
He were always good to me.

If only he were pleased
Would that he might be pleased
with me, after this and that.
With me after this and that.
