خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends مَنwhich one أَشتاقُI yearn for فيin البُعدِdistance مِنكُماof you two
فَلوfor if كانَit were شَوقاًa longing واحِداًone لَكَفانيit would suffice me
My two friends, which of you do I yearn for from afar?
For were it but one longing, it would suffice me.
خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends وَجديmy passion كَالَّذيlike what قَدalready عَلِمتُماyou two have known
فَهَلso do مِثلَthe like of وَجديmy passion أَنتُماyou two تَجِدانِyou two feel
My two friends, my passion is as you have known it;
so do you two feel a passion like mine?
خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends قَدalready أَبصَرتُماyou two have seen وَسَمِعتُماand you two have heard
فَهَلso is there لِيَfor me فيamong أَهلِthe people of المَحَبَّةِlove مِنany ثانِequal
My two friends, you have seen and heard;
so have I any equal among the lovers?
وَجَدَّدتُماand you two have revived ليfor me صَبوَةًa youthful passion قَدalready نَسيتُهاI had forgotten it
وَعَهدَand a time of غَرامٍardent love كانَwas مُنذُago زَمانِa long time
And you have revived in me a youthful passion I had forgotten,
and a time of ardent love from long ago.
كَأَنَّas though غُرابَthe raven of البَينِseparation يَومَon the day of فِراقِناour parting
أَعارَlent فُؤاديmy heart شِدَّةَthe intensity of الخَفَقانِfluttering
As though the raven of separation, on the day we parted,
had lent my heart its violent fluttering.
عَلىyet أَنَّنيthat I am ذاكَthat الوَفِيُّfaithful one الَّذيwho لَهُto him belong
عُهودُvows of هَوىًlove تَبقىendure عَلىdespite الحَدَثانِtime's vicissitudes
Yet I am that faithful one whose
vows of love endure despite the vicissitudes of time.
فَماfor … not فاضَoverflowed ماءُthe waters of النيلِthe Nile إِلّاexcept بِمَدمَعيwith my tears
لَقَدindeed مَرَجَhe let loose البَحرَينِthe two seas يَلتَقِيانِthey both meet
For the Nile's waters overflowed only with my tears;
indeed, he has let the two seas loose to meet.
