حَبيبيmy beloved عَينُهُhis eye قالواthey said تَشَكَّتwas ailing
حَبيبي عَينُهُ قالوا تَشَكَّت
وَذَلِكَand that لَوif دَرَواthey knew عَينُthe very essence of المُحالِimpossibility
وَذَلِكَ لَو دَرَوا عَينُ المُحالِ
They said my beloved's eye was ailing;
and that, if they knew, is sheer impossibility.
أَتَشكوdoes it complain of عَينُهُhis eye رَمداًeye inflammation وَفيهاand of it
أَتَشكو عَينُهُ رَمداً وَفيها
يُقالُit is said أَصَحُّhealthier مِنthan عَينِthe eye of الغَزالِthe gazelle
يُقالُ أَصَحُّ مِن عَينِ الغَزالِ
Does his eye complain of inflammation, when it
is said to be healthier than a gazelle's eye?
وَلكِنand yet أَشبَهَتit resembled لَونَthe color of الحُمَيّاwine
وَلكِن أَشبَهَت لَونَ الحُمَيّا
كَماjust as قَدalready أَشبَهَتهاit resembled it فيin الفِعالِeffects
كَما قَد أَشبَهَتها في الفِعالِ
But it resembles wine in color,
just as it has already resembled it in its effects.
