تَعالواcome بِناwith us نَطويlet us fold away الحَديثَthe talk الَّذيthat جَرىtook place
وَلاand not سَمِعَhear الواشيthe talebearer بِذاكَof that وَلاand not دَرىknow
Come, let us fold away the talk that passed,
and may the talebearer neither hear of it nor know.
تَعالواcome بِناwith us حَتّىuntil نَعودَwe return إِلىto الرِضىcontentment
وَحَتّىand until كَأَنَّas though العَهدَthe bond لَنwill not يَتَغَيَّراchange
Come, let us return to harmony,
until it is as though our bond will never change.
وَلاand do not تَذكُرواmention ذاكَthat الَّذيwhich كانَhappened بَينَناbetween us
عَلىdespite أَنَّهُthe fact that it ماnot كانَwas ذَنبٌan offense فَيُذكَراso as to be mentioned
And do not mention what passed between us,
though there was no offense to speak of.
نَسَبتُمyou ascribed لَناto us الغَدرَthe treachery الَّذيthat كانَwas مِنكُمُfrom you
فَلاso may not آخَذَhold to account الرَحمَنُthe All-Merciful مَنwhoever كانَwas أَعذَراmore excusable
You ascribed to us the treachery that was yours;
so may the All-Merciful not punish whoever had the better excuse.
لَقَدindeed طالَgrew long شَرحُthe explanation of القالِthe talk وَالقيلِand the hearsay بَينَناbetween us
وَماand not طالَgrew long ذاكَthat الشَرحُexplanation إِلّاexcept لِيَقصُراso it might grow brief
Long have we gone over what was said between us,
yet that explanation grew long only to grow brief.
مَتىwhen يَجمَعُwill gather الرَحمَنُthe All-Merciful شَمليmy scattered life بِقُربِكُمthrough nearness to you
وَيَصفوand become clear لَناfor us مِنof عَيشِناour life ماwhat تَكَدَّراgrew clouded
When will the All-Merciful make me whole again through nearness to you,
and what has grown clouded in our life turn clear for us?
سَأَذكُرُI shall remember إِحساناًa kindness تَقَدَّمَcame earlier مِنكُمُfrom you
وَأَترُكُand I set aside إِكراماًout of respect لَهُfor it ماwhat تَأَخَّراcame later
I shall remember your earlier kindness,
and, in its honor, set aside what came later.
مِنَfrom اليَومِtoday تاريخُthe dating of المَحَبَّةِlove بَينَناbetween us
عَفاmay forgive اللَهُGod عَنfor ذاكَthat العِتابِreproach الَّذيwhich جَرىtook place
From today we date the love between us;
may God forgive that reproach that passed.
فَكَمfor how many لَيلَةٍa night بِتناwe spent the night وَكَمand how much باتَspent the night بَينَناbetween us
مِنَof الأُنسِcompanionship ماthat which يُنسىis forgotten بِهِthrough it طَيِّبُthe sweetness of الكَرىsleep
For many a night we spent together, and much lingered between us
of companionship that made us forget the sweetness of sleep—
أَحاديثُconversations أَحلىsweeter فيin النُفوسِthe souls مِنَthan المُنىwishes
وَأَلطَفُand gentler مِنthan مَرِّthe passing of النَسيمِthe breeze إِذاwhen سَرىit moves by night
conversations sweeter to the soul than wishes,
and gentler than the passing of the breeze as it drifts by night.
