رَعىmay He watch over اللَهُGod لَيلَةَa night of وَصلٍunion خَلَتgone by
وَماand no خالَطَmingled with الصَفوُthe serenity فيهاin it كَدَرtrouble
May God bless that bygone night of union,
And no trouble clouded its serenity.
أَتَتit came بَغتَةًsuddenly وَمَضَتand it passed سُرعَةًswiftly
وَماand not قَصَّرَتit fell short مَعَdespite ذاكَthat القِصَرthe brevity
It came suddenly and passed swiftly,
Yet fell short in nothing, despite its brevity.
وَلاnor مَوعِدٍan appointment بَينَناbetween us يُنتَظَرto be awaited
Without ceremony or trouble,
Nor an appointed meeting for us to await.
فَقُلتُso I said وَقَدand indeed كادَalmost قَلبيmy heart يَطيfly (continued)
رُcompletion of 'fly' سُروراًfor joy بِنَيلِat attaining المُنىthe wishes وَالوَطَرand the desire
So I said, as my heart almost took
Flight for joy at attaining my wishes and desire:
أَياO قَلبِmy heart تَعرِفُdo you know مَنwho قَدindeed أَتاcame
كَto you وَياعَينِand O my eye تَدرينَdo you know مَنwho قَدindeed حَضَرhas arrived
O my heart, do you know who has come
To you? And O my eye, do you know who is here?
وَياand O قَمَرَmoon of الأُفقِthe horizon عُدreturn راجِعاًgoing back
فَقَدfor indeed باتَspent the night فيon الأَرضِthe earth عِنديwith me قَمَرa moon
And O moon of the horizon, turn back,
For a moon now spends the night with me on earth.
وَياand O لَيلَتيmy night هَكَذاlike this هَكَذاlike this
وَبِاللَهِand by God بِاللَهِby God قِفstand still ياO سَحَرpredawn hour
And O my night—just so, just so!
And by God, by God, stand still, O dawn!
فَكانَتso it was كَماjust as نَشتَهيwe desire لَيلَةًa night
وَطالَand grew long الحَديثُthe conversation وَطابَand grew sweet السَمَرthe nighttime talk
So it was a night just as we wished,
And talk ran long, and our nighttime converse was sweet.
وَمَرَّand passed لَناfor us مِنof لَطيفِgentle العِتاthe reproach (continued)
بِcompletion of 'reproach' عَجائِبُwonders ماnot مِثلُهاtheir like فيin السِيَرthe chronicles
And we exchanged such gentle reproaches—
Wonders unmatched in the chronicles.
وَرُحناand we went نَجُرُّwe trail ذُيولَskirts of العَفاchastity (continued)
فِcompletion of 'chastity' وَنَسحَبُهاand we drag them فَوقَover ذاكَthat الأَثَرthe trace
And we went off trailing the skirts of chastity,
And dragging them over those traces.
خَلَوناwe were alone وَماand no بَينَناamong us ثالِثٌa third
فَأَصبَحَso by morning it was عِندَwith النَسيمِthe breeze الخَبَرthe news
We were alone, with no third among us,
Yet by morning the breeze had the news.
