خَليلَيَّmy two friends أَمّاas for هَذِهِthese فَدِيارُهُمthen, their dwellings
وَأَمّاand as for غَراميmy passion فَهوَthen it is ماwhat تَرَيانِyou both see
My two companions, as for these—these are their dwellings;
My two friends, as for these, they are their dwellings;
and as for my passion, it is what you both behold.
And as for my passion, it is what you both see.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنّيindeed I لاnot أَرىI see ليfor me سِواكُماother than you two
فَماso what تَأمُرانيyou two bid me أَيُّهاO الرَجُلانِthe two men
My two companions, I see no one for me but you two;
My two friends, I see that I have none but you two;
so what do you bid me, O two men?
So what do you bid me do, O you two men?
خَليلَيَّmy two friends هَذاthis مَوقِفٌa place to stand يَبعَثُstirs البُكاweeping
فَماذاso what الَّذيthat which بِالدَمعِwith tears تَنتَظِرانِyou two await
My two companions, this is a place where weeping knows no bounds;
My two friends, this is a place that moves one to tears;
so what, then, are your tears waiting for?
So what are you two waiting for before shedding tears?
وَإِنand if كُنتُماyou two are لاnot تُسعِدانيyou two aid me عَلىin الأَسىsorrow
قِفاstop, both of you وَدِّعانيbid me farewell, both of you ساعَةًfor a moment وَدَعانيand leave me, both of you
And if you will not help me bear my sorrow,
And if you two will not aid me in my sorrow,
then stop, bid me farewell awhile, and leave me alone.
Stop, bid me farewell for a moment, and leave me.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I عَلىat دارِthe dwelling of الحَبيبِthe beloved لَواقِفٌindeed standing
وَإِنand even if شَفَّwore thin قَلبيmy heart رَسمُهاits traces وَشَجانيand grieved me
For I shall stand here at the beloved’s dwelling,
For I am indeed standing at the beloved's dwelling,
though its traces wear my heart away and fill me with grief.
Even though its traces have worn my heart thin and grieved me.
فَلَوfor if كانَwere ماwhat اَلقىI endure مِنَof الحُزنِsorrow واحِداًone
بَكَيتُI would weep بِدَمعٍwith tears واحِدٍsingle وَكَفانيand it would suffice me
If all the sorrow I endure were but a single sorrow,
For if the sorrow I endure were only one,
I would shed a single flood of tears, and that would suffice me.
I would weep a single tear, and that would suffice me.
وَلَكِنَّand yet أَحزاناًsorrows عَرَتنيhave assailed me كَثيرَةًmany
وَماand not لِيَfor me مِنهاof them بِالكَثيرِwith so many يَدانِtwo hands (strength)
But many sorrows have assailed me,
But many sorrows have assailed me,
and I have no strength to cope with so many.
And I have no strength to bear so many of them.
فَياso, O وَيحَalas for قَلبيmy heart بِالغَرامِin passion أَطَعتُهُI obeyed it
فَماso what ليwith me أَراهُI see it فيin السُلُوِّforgetting love عَصانيit disobeyed me
Alas for my heart! In love I obeyed it;
So alas for my heart! I obeyed it in passion;
why, then, do I find it disobeying me when I would forget?
So why do I see it defy me when I seek to forget?
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِيّاهُand it كَماas قالَsaid قائِلٌsomeone
رَفيقُكَyour companion قَيسِيٌّof Qays وَأَنتَand you يَمانيof Yemen
Indeed, my heart and I are as someone once said:
And indeed, my heart and I are as someone said:
“Your companion is a Qaysite, while you are a Yemenite.”
"Your companion is of Qays, and you are of Yemen."
