وَعاذِلَةٍand a reproachful woman باتَتshe spent the night تَلومُshe blames عَلىfor الهَوىlove
وَبِالنَسكِand toward ascetic devotion فيin شَرخِthe prime of الشَبابِyouth تُشيرُshe counsels
A reproachful woman spent the night blaming me for love,
And urged ascetic devotion in the prime of youth.
لَقَدindeed أَنكَرَتshe found strange مِنّيin me مَشيباًgray hair عَلىdespite صِبىًyouth
وَرَقَّتand she felt pity لِقَلبيfor my heart وَهوَwhile it was فيهِin it أَسيرُa captive
She indeed found my gray hair strange despite my youth,
And pitied my heart, held captive in love.
أَتَتنيshe came to me وَقالَتand said ياO زُهَيرُZuhayr أَصَبوَةٌyouthful passion?
وَأَنتَand you حَقيقٌworthy بِالعَفافِof chastity جَديرُdeserving
She came to me and said, “O Zuhayr, do you indulge in youthful passion,
When you are worthy of chastity and suited to it?”
فَقُلتُso I said دَعينيlet me أَغتَنِمهاI seize it مَسَرَّةًas a pleasure
فَماfor not كُلُّevery وَقتٍmoment يَستَقيمُis attainable سُرورُjoy
So I said, “Let me seize this chance for joy;
For joy is not attainable at every moment.
دَعينِيَleave me وَاللَذّاتِand pleasures فيin زَمَنِthe time of الصِباyouth
فَإِنfor if لامَنيblame me الأَقوامُthe people قيلَit will be said صَغيرُyoung
Leave me to pleasures in the days of youth;
For if people blame me, it will be said, ‘He is young.’
وَعَيشِكِby your life هَذاthis وَقتُthe time of لَهويmy play وَصَبوَتيand my youthful passion
وَغُصنيand my branch كَماas قَدindeed تَعلَمينَyou know نَضيرُfresh and green
By your life, this is the time for my play and passion,
And my branch, as you well know, is fresh and green.
يُوَلَّهُdrives to distraction عَقليmy mind قامَةٌstature وَرَشاقَةٌand grace
وَيَخلُبُand bewitches قَلبيmy heart أَعيُنٌeyes وَثُغورُand mouths
Stature and grace drive my mind to distraction,
And eyes and mouths bewitch my heart.
فَإِنfor if مُتُّI die فيin ذاthis الحُبِّlove لَستُI am not بِأَوَّلٍthe first
فَقَبلِيَfor before me ماتَdied العاشِقونَthe lovers كَثيرُmany
For if I die in this love, I shall not be the first;
For many lovers have died before me.
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىdespite ماwhat فِيَّis within me مِنof وَلَعِpassion الصِباyouth
جَديرٌworthy بِأَسبابِof the ways of التُقىpiety وَخَبيرُand well versed
And I, despite the youthful passion within me,
Am worthy of piety’s ways and well versed in them.
وَإِنand if عَرَضَتarises ليfor me فيin المَحَبَّةِlove نَشوَةٌintoxication
وَحَقِّكِby your honor إِنّيindeed I ثابِتٌsteadfast وَوَقورُand dignified
And if intoxication comes upon me in love,
By your honor, I am indeed steadfast and dignified.
وَإِنand if رَقَّgrows tender مِنّيof mine مَنطِقٌspeech وَشَمائِلٌand manners
فَماso not هَمَّhas contemplated مِنّيwithin me بِالقَبيحِanything vile ضَميرُa conscience
And though my speech and manners are tender,
My conscience has never contemplated anything vile.
وَماand not ضَرَّنيhas harmed me أَنّيthat I صَغيرٌyoung حَداثَةًin age
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِفَضليby my merit فيamong الأَنامِhumankind كَبيرُgreat
It does me no harm that I am young in years,
While by my merit I am great among humankind.”
