هَواناًhumiliation بِالهَوىthrough love كَمhow long ذاthis التَجَنّيunjust treatment
وَكَمand how long هَذاthis التَعَلُّلُexcuse-making وَالتَمَنّيand wishing
Humiliation through love—how long this cruelty?
And how long these excuses and these wishes?
هَوىًlove وَصَبابَةٌand ardent longing وَقِلىًand hatred وَهَجرٌand abandonment
حَبيبيmy beloved بَعضُsome of هَذاthis كانَwas يُغنيsuffices
Love and yearning, hatred and abandonment—
My beloved, some of this would have sufficed.
فَياso, O مَنthe one whom لاnot أُسَمّيهِI name him وَلَكِنand yet
أُعَرِّضُI allude عَنهُto him لِلواشيto the talebearer وَأَكنيand speak obliquely
So, you whom I do not name, but
Allude to before the talebearer, speaking in hints:
حَبيبيmy beloved كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing مِنكَfrom you عِنديin my eyes
مَليحٌlovely ماخَلاexcept الإِعراضُturning away عَنّيfrom me
My beloved, everything about you, in my eyes,
Is lovely, except your turning away from me.
كَمَلتَyou are perfect مَلاحَةًin beauty وَكَمَلتَand you are perfect ظَرفاًin charm
فَلَيتَكَso, would that you لَوif سَلِمتَyou were free مِنَfrom التَجَنّيunjust treatment
You are perfect in beauty and perfect in charm;
If only you were free of such cruelty!
ظَنَنتُI thought بِكَof you الجَميلَgood وَأَنتَand you are أَهلٌworthy
بِحَقِّكَby your own worth لاdo not تُخَيِّبُdisappoint فيكَin you ظَنّيmy opinion
I thought well of you, and you are worthy;
By your own worth, do not belie my good opinion of you.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you فُقتَyou surpassed كُلَّall الناسِpeople حُسناًin beauty
فَكانَso was بِقَدرِin proportion to حُسنِكَyour beauty فيكَover you حُزنيmy sorrow
I saw that you surpassed everyone in beauty,
So my sorrow over you was as great as your beauty.
وَماand not أَناI فيin المَحَبَّةِlove مِثلُlike غَيريothers besides me
إِلَيكَto you أُشيرُI point فيin قَوليmy words وَأَعنيand I mean
And I am not like others in love;
It is you I point to in my words, and you I mean.
فَقَدfor indeed أَضحىhas become الغَرامُpassion حَليفَsworn ally of قَلبيmy heart
كَماjust as أَمسىhas become السُهادُsleeplessness أَليفَintimate companion of جَفنيmy eyelid
For passion has become my heart's sworn ally,
As sleeplessness has become my eyelid's companion.
فَياso, O شَوقيmy longing إِلىfor ثَغرٍa mouth وَقَدٍand a figure
حَلَتbecame sweet مِنهُof him الثَناياthe front teeth وَالتَثَنّيand the swaying
Oh, my longing for a mouth and a figure,
Whose teeth and swaying are so sweet!
أَقولُI say لِصاحِبٍto a friend فيabout الحُبِّlove يَلحىhe reproaches
كَفانيis enough for me ذاthis الغَرامُpassion فَلاso do not تَزِدنيgive me more
I say to a friend who chides me over love:
This passion is enough for me, so give me no more.
تَرىyou hold فيin الحُبِّlove رَأياًa view غَيرَother than رَأييmy view
وَتَسلُكُand you follow فيهِin it فَنّاًa way غَيرَother than فَنّيmy way
You take a view of love different from mine,
And follow in it a course unlike my own.
فَإِنso if وافَقتَنيyou agree with me أَهلاًwelcome وَسَهلاًand be at ease
وَإِلّاand if not لَستُI am not مِنكَof you وَلَستَand you are not مِنّيof me
So if you agree with me, you are welcome;
Otherwise, I am not of you, nor are you of me.
