وَحَقِّكُمُby your honor ماnot غَيَّرَchanged البُعدُdistance عَهدَكُمthe pledge to you
وَإِنand even if حالَchanged حالٌa condition أَوor تَغَيَّرَaltered شانُa circumstance
By your honor, distance has not altered my pledge to you,
Your right upon me time has not made waver
even if conditions change or circumstances alter.
Though state may change or circumstance alter
فَلاso do not تَسمَعواheed فيناabout us بِحَقِّكُمُby your honor الَّذيwhat
يَقولُsays فُلانٌso-and-so عِندَكُمin your presence وَفُلانُand so-and-so
So, by your honor, do not heed the talk about us that
So hear no ill of me, I do implore
so-and-so and so-and-so utter in your presence.
When slanderers whisper, doubt me no more
لَدَيَّwith me لَكُمfor you ذاكَthat الوَفاءُloyalty بِعَينِهِitself
وَعِنديand with me لَكُمfor you ذاكَthat الوِدادُaffection يُصانُis safeguarded
I hold for you that very same loyalty,
My faithfulness to you is still the same
and that affection for you is preserved with me.
My love endures, from you it took its name
وَماand not حَلَّsettled عِنديwith me غَيرُكُمanyone other than you فيin مَحَلِّكُمyour place
لِكُلِّfor every حَبيبٍbeloved فيin الفُؤادِthe heart مَكانُa place
And no one else has taken your place with me;
None in your place within my heart e'er dwelled
every beloved has a place in the heart.
For every love a place is held
وَمِنand from شَغَفيmy passion فيكُمfor you وَوَجدِيَand my longing أَنَّنيthat I

أُهَوِّنُI make light of ماwhat أَلقاهُI encounter it وَهوَthough it is هَوانُhumiliation
And such is my passion for you and my longing that I
My passion for you makes all hardship seem
make light of what I endure, though it is humiliation.
As nothing, though disgrace extreme
هَبونيgrant me أَماناًsafety مِنfrom عِتابِكُمُyour reproach عَسىperhaps

Grant me safety from your reproach; perhaps
Grant me your pardon if you see me stray
eyes will find comfort, or a heart find peace.
That eyes may rest or heart be comforted one day
وَيَحسُنُand becomes beautiful قُبحُugliness الفِعلِthe deed إِنif جاءَit comes مِنكُمُfrom you
كَماjust as طابَbecame sweet ريحُthe scent العودِaloeswood وَهوَthough it is دُخانُsmoke
And an ugly deed becomes beautiful if it comes from you,
From you all wrong is right whate’er befall
just as the scent of aloeswood is sweet, though it is smoke.
As pleasant is the smoke that leaves the lit coals
رَعىmay watch over اللَهُGod قَوماًa people شَطَّlies far away عَنّيfrom me مَزارُهُمtheir place of visitation
وَكُنتُand I was لَهُمto them ذاكَthat الوَفِيَّfaithful one وَكانواand they were
May God watch over people whose abode lies far from me;
God guard the folk whose friendship I have lost
and I was that faithful one to them, and so were they.
And I was faithful, staunch, whate’er the cost
وَكَمand how many عَزمَةٍa resolve ليof mine عاقَهاthwarted it الدَهرُtime عَنهُمُfrom them
وَلِلدَهرِand time has فيin بَعضِsome الأُمورِmatters حِرانُstubborn refusal
And how many a resolve to reach them has time thwarted for me!
Full many a purpose has blind fate denied
And time stubbornly balks in certain matters.
For fate in things plays errant guide
عَلىyet أَنَّنيthat I أَنويI intend وَلِلمَرءِand a person has ماwhat نَوىhe intended
إِلىuntil أَنthat تُوافيarrives قُدرَةٌability وَزَمانُand time
Yet I hold to my intention—and one has what one intends—
Yet intention counts, as sages say
until the means and the time are at hand.
Until the means and time make way
