هُوَit حَظّيmy lot قَدalready عَرَفتُهُI have known it
هُوَ حَظّي قَد عَرَفتُهُ
لَمhas not يَحُلchanged عَمّاfrom what عَهِدتُهُI knew it to be
لَم يَحُل عَمّا عَهِدتُهُ
It is my lot; I have come to know it.
It has not changed from what I knew.
فَإِذاso if قَصَّرَfalls short مَنthe one whom أَهI love him (first part)
فَإِذا قَصَّرَ مَن أَه
واهُI love him (completion) فيin الوُدِّaffection عَذَرتُهُI excuse him
واهُ في الوُدِّ عَذَرتُهُ
So if the one I love falls short
in affection, I excuse him.
غَيرَexcept أَنَّthat لِيَfor me فيin الحُبlove (first part)
غَيرَ أَنَّ لِيَ في الحُب
بِlove (completion) طَريقاًa path قَدalready سَلَكتُهُI have followed it
بِ طَريقاً قَد سَلَكتُهُ
Yet in love I have
a path that I have followed.
لَوif أَرادَhe wished البُعدَseparation عَنّيfrom me
لَو أَرادَ البُعدَ عَنّي
نورُthe light عَينَيmy two eyes ماتَبِعتُهُI would not follow him
نورُ عَينَي ماتَبِعتُهُ
If he wished to part from me—
the light of my eyes—I would not follow him.
إِنَّindeed قَلبيmy heart لَوif تَجَنّىacted unjustly
إِنَّ قَلبي لَو تَجَنّى
وَهُوَand it is قَلبيmy heart ماصَحِبتُهُI would not keep its company
وَهُوَ قَلبي ماصَحِبتُهُ
Indeed, if my heart were to wrong me,
though it is my heart, I would not keep its company.
كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing مِنfrom حَبيبيmy beloved
كُلُّ شَيءٍ مِن حَبيبي
ماexception marker خَلاexcluding الغَدرَbetrayal اِحتَمَلتُهُI have borne it
ما خَلا الغَدرَ اِحتَمَلتُهُ
Everything from my beloved,
except betrayal, I have borne.
أَناI فيin الحُبِّlove غَيورٌjealous
أَنا في الحُبِّ غَيورٌ
ذاكَthat خُلُقيmy nature لاmay ... not عِدِمتُهُI lose it
ذاكَ خُلُقي لا عِدِمتُهُ
I am jealous in love;
that is my nature—may I never lose it.
أُبصِرُI see المَوتَdeath إِذاwhenever أَبsees (first part)
أُبصِرُ المَوتَ إِذا أَب
صَرَsees (completion) غَيريsomeone other than me مَنthe one whom عَشِقتُهُI adored him
صَرَ غَيري مَن عَشِقتُهُ
I see death whenever
another sees the one I adore.
لَستُI am not سَمحاًgenerous بِوِداديwith my affection
لَستُ سَمحاً بِوِدادي
كُلُّeveryone مَنwho نادىcalled أَجَبتُهُI answered him
كُلُّ مَن نادى أَجَبتُهُ
I am not so free with my affection
that I answer everyone who calls.
طالَماoften تِهتُI acted haughtily عَلىtoward خاsuitor (first part)
طالَما تِهتُ عَلى خا
طِبِsuitor (completion) وِدّيmy affection وَرَدَدتُهُand I turned him away
طِبِ وِدّي وَرَدَدتُهُ
Often I have been haughty toward a suitor
for my affection, and turned him away.
قَدindeed شَكَرتُI thanked اللَهَGod فيfor
قَد شَكَرتُ اللَهَ في
ماwhat كانَhappened مِنكُمfrom you وَحَمِدتُهُand I praised Him
ما كانَ مِنكُم وَحَمِدتُهُ
I have thanked God for
what came from you, and praised Him,
حينَwhen خَلَّصتُI freed فُؤاديmy heart
حينَ خَلَّصتُ فُؤادي
مِنfrom يَدَيكُمyour two hands وَمَلَكتُهُand I made it mine
مِن يَدَيكُم وَمَلَكتُهُ
when I freed my heart
from your hands and made it mine.
كانَwas قَلبيmy heart مُستَريحاًat rest
كانَ قَلبي مُستَريحاً
مِنfrom هَواكُمlove for you ماwhile أَرَحتُهُI gave it rest
مِن هَواكُم ما أَرَحتُهُ
My heart was at peace,
free of love for you while I let it rest.
فَلَوso even if أَنَّthat القُربَcloseness يُحييrevives
فَلَو أَنَّ القُربَ يُحيي
نِيَme مِنكُمfrom you ماnot طَلبتُهُI would seek it
نِيَ مِنكُم ما طَلبتُهُ
So even if closeness to you could revive
me, I would not seek it.
