أَناI فيماin what أَناI فيهِin it
وَعَذوليand my reproacher يَتَعَتَّبkeeps finding fault
I am in the state I am in,
I am as I am
And my reproacher keeps finding fault.
And my critic annoys me
أَناI لاnot أُصغيlisten لِماto what قاhe said (first part)
لَcompletion of 'he said' فَيَرضىso he is pleased أَوor فَيَغضَبso he grows angry
I pay no heed to what he
I do not listen to what is said
Said—so let him be pleased or angry.
To please or anger him
وَلَقَدand indeed أُصغيI listen وَلَكِنbut
أَسمَعُI hear العَذلَthe reproach فَأَطرَبso I am delighted
And indeed I listen, but
And I have listened but
I hear the reproach and am delighted.
I hear the criticism and rejoice
جَهِلَdid not understand العاذِلُthe reproacher أَمريmy situation
أَناI بِالعاذِلِwith the reproacher أَلعَبtoy
The reproacher has not understood my situation;
The critic is ignorant of my affair
I toy with the reproacher.
I play with the critic
ياO حَبيبيmy beloved وَنَديميand my boon companion
وَاللَياليand the nights تَتَقَلَّبkeep changing
O my beloved and my boon companion,
Oh my beloved and my boon companion
And the nights keep changing,
As the nights go by
هاتِbring it فيماin what نَحنُwe فيهِin it
وَدَعِand leave العاذِلَthe reproacher يَتعَبto grow weary
Bring it, while we are as we are,
Give me what we are in
And let the reproacher wear himself out.
And leave the critic to toil
