ناعِمَ البالِ رَضِيّا
And thanks to a drinking companion, I spent the night
at ease and content.

قارَبَ البَدرُ الثُرَيّا
He came to me carrying a cup;
the full moon drew near the Pleiades.

He said, “Take it.” I said, “Take it
yourself, and drink it with pleasure.

Do not add to my drunkenness
from love the drunkenness of wine.”

At that, he turned away from me,
his head bowed in bashfulness.

I said, “No, by God! Just
hand it here, a brimming cup.

I disobey no prohibition of yours.”

So he gave me wine to drink,
which leaves an old man a boy,

Unceasingly, from me to him passed the
cup, or from him to me.

So it went, until dawn appeared
to us, with a beaming face.
