وَزائِرَةٍand a female visitor زارَتshe visited وَقَدand already هَجَمَswept in الدُجىthe darkness
وَكُنتُand I was لِميعادٍfor an appointed meeting لَهاfor her مُتَرَقِّباwaiting expectantly
And a woman came to visit when darkness had swept in,
A visitor came while darkness prevailed,
And I was waiting expectantly for a meeting with her.
And I was waiting for her rendezvous.
فَماthen nothing راعَنيstartled me إِلّاexcept رَخيمُsoft and melodious كَلامِهاher speech
تَقولُshe says حَبيبيmy beloved قُلتُI said أَهلاًwelcome وَمَرحَباand welcome
Then nothing startled me but her soft, melodious speech:
Her gentle voice alerted me,
She said, 'My beloved'; I replied, 'Welcome, welcome!'
Saying "My love", I said "Welcome, please come in."
فَقَبَّلتُso I kissed أَقداماًfeet لِغَيرِيَfor anyone other than me مامَشَتhad never walked
وَوَجهاًand a face مَصوناًkept inviolate عَنfrom سِوايَanyone but me مُحَجَّباveiled
So I kissed feet that had never walked for anyone but me,
I kissed feet not meant for me,
And a face kept inviolate, veiled from all but me.
And a face veiled from me.
وَلَمand did not تَرَsee عَينيmy eye لَيلَةًa night مِثلَlike لَيلَتيmy night
فَياso, O سَهَريmy wakefulness فيهاin it لَقَدindeed كُنتَyou were طَيِّباsweet
And my eye had never seen a night like mine.
My eyes never saw a night like my night,
So, O my wakefulness that night, you were sweet indeed!
So my wakefulness in it, you were good company.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod بَعضَone of الناسِthe people ماwhat هُوَhe أَهلُهُworthy of it
وَحَيّاهُand greet him عَنّيon my behalf كُلَّماwhenever هَبَّتِblew الصَباthe east wind
May God reward a certain person as he deserves,
May God reward some people as they deserve,
And greet him on my behalf whenever the east wind blows.
And greet him from me whenever the breeze blows.
حَبيبٌa beloved لِأَجليfor my sake قَدindeed تَعَنّىtook pains وَزارَنيand visited me
وَماand what قيمَتيmy worth حَتّىthat مَشىhe walked وَتَعَذَّباand suffered
A beloved took pains for my sake and visited me;
A lover visited me and suffered for me,
And what am I worth, that he should walk and suffer?
Yet I'm not even worth his walk and torment.
وَفىhe kept faith ليfor me بِوَعدٍwith a promise مِثلُهُone like him مَنwhoever وَفىkept faith بِهِwith it
وَمِثلِيَand one like me فيهِfor him عاشِقٌa lover هامَbecame mad with love أَوor صَباbecame enamored
He kept a promise to me; whoever keeps it is one like him,
He kept a promise the likes of which keepers of promises kept,
And a lover mad with love for him, or smitten, is one like me.
And the likes of lovers who pine or swoon kept.
فَأَنقَذَso he rescued عَيناًan eye فيin الدُموعِtears غَريقَةًdrowning
وَخَلَّصَand freed قَلباًa heart بِالجَفاءِby estrangement مُعَذَّباtormented
So he rescued an eye drowning in tears,
He saved drowning eyes in tears,
And freed a heart tormented by estrangement.
And rescued a heart tortured by estrangement.
سَأَشكُرُI shall thank كُلَّall الشُكرِgratitude إِحسانَkindness مُحسِنٍa benefactor
تَحَيَّلَhe devised stratagems حَتّىuntil زارَنيhe visited me وَتَسَبَّباand found the means
I shall offer fullest thanks for a benefactor's kindness,
I will give all gratitude for the kindness of a benefactor
Who contrived and found a way to visit me.
Who persevered until he visited me and took pains.
وَماand did not زارَنيhe visited me حَتّىuntil رَأىhe saw الناسَthe people نُوَّماًasleep
وَراقَبَand watched ضَوءَthe light of البَدرِthe full moon حَتّىuntil تَغَيَّباit disappeared
And he did not visit me until he saw the people asleep,
He did not visit until he saw people sleeping,
And watched the full moon's light until it disappeared.
And watched the moonlight until it hid.
