وَلَيلَةٍand a night ماnot مِثلُهاits like قَطّever عُهِدwas known
وَلَيلَةٍ ما مِثلُها قَطّ عُهِد
مِثلَlike حَشىthe heart العاشِقِof the lover باتَتit spent the night تَتَّقِدit blazes
مِثلَ حَشى العاشِقِ باتَت تَتَّقِد
And a night whose like had never been known,
A night like no other I've known
Like a lover's heart, it spent the night ablaze.
The lover's passion kindled and shown
طَلَبتُI sought فيهاin it مُؤنِساًa companion فَلَمbut did not أَجِدI find
طَلَبتُ فيها مُؤنِساً فَلَم أَجِد
بِتُّI spent the night أُقاسيهاI endure it وَحيداًalone مُنفَرِدsolitary
بِتُّ أُقاسيها وَحيداً مُنفَرِد
I sought a companion in it, but found none.
I sought a companion but found not one
I spent the night enduring it, alone and solitary.
Alone I endured till the darkness was done
طالَتit grew long فَأَمّاthen as for صُبحُهاits dawn فَقَدthen indeed فُقِدwas lost
طالَت فَأَمّا صُبحُها فَقَد فُقِد
فَتَحبَلُso she conceives المَرأَةُthe woman فيهاin it وَتَلِدand she gives birth
فَتَحبَلُ المَرأَةُ فيها وَتَلِد
It dragged on; as for its dawn, it was missing.
Long was the night and the dawn delayed
So a woman conceives in it and gives birth.
A woman travailed and a child was made
