وَلَيلَةٍand a night مِنَamong اللَياليthe nights الصالِحَهblessed
باتَتspent the night بِهاduring it الهُمومُthe cares عَنّيaway from me نازِحَهfar away
And a night among the blessed nights,
And a night of the virtuous nights
During which cares stayed far away from me;
In which worries departed from me
وَغادَةٍand a graceful maiden بِوَصلِهاin union with her مُسامِحَهgenerous
تَحفَظُshe guards وُديmy love مِثلَlike حِفظِmemorizing الفاتِحَهal-Fatiha
And a graceful maiden, generous in granting union,
And a beauty with her forgiveness indulgent
She guards my love as she guards al-Fatiha in memory.
Keeps my love like keeping the Fatiha
كَأَنَّهاas though she بَعضُone of الظِباءِthe gazelles السانِحَهcrossing auspiciously from left to right
باتَتwas that night بِهاthrough her صَفقَةُthe bargain وُدّيmy love رابِحَهprofitable
As though she were one of the gazelles crossing auspiciously,
As if she were some of the pouring gazelles
Through her, my love’s bargain proved profitable that night.
I spent the night with my love deal profitable
ماnot سَكَنَتgrew still مَنfrom طَرَبٍjoy ليof mine جارِحَهa limb

فَأَلسُنٌso tongues بِماof what تَحِنُّthey yearn for بائِحَهspeaking openly
Not a limb of mine was still for joy.
It did not settle any disturbance that hurt me
So tongues spoke openly of what they yearned for,
So tongues with what they yearn wailing
وَأَعِينٌand eyes عِندَduring التَشاكيmutual lamenting طافِحَهoverflowing
إِذاwhen اِختَصَرناwe spoke briefly فَالدُموعُthen the tears شارِحَهexplaining
And eyes overflowed as we shared our sorrows.
And eyes during lament overflowing
When we spoke briefly, tears explained.
When we summarize, the tears are flowing

She kept a promise, then rose to leave,
And she broke a promise, then went away
And lodged a scorching fire in my heart.
And deposited in my heart a blazing fire
وَاللَهُby God ماnot اللَيلَةُtonight مِثلَlike البارِحَهlast night
فَياso, O صِحابيmy companions فيin الخُطوبِthe misfortunes الفادِحَهgrievous
By God, tonight is not like last night!
By God, tonight is not like last night
So, O my companions in grievous misfortunes,
So my friends in the tremendous afflictions
هَبكُمsuppose you رَحِمتُمtook pity لِيَof mine نَفَساًa soul طائِحَهperishing
هَبكُمsuppose you أَعَنتُمhelped بِدُموعٍwith tears سافِحَهstreaming
Suppose you took pity on my perishing soul,
Grant me your mercy, a wandering soul
Suppose you helped me with streaming tears—
Grant me your help, with pouring tears
ماnot تَقنَعُis content الثَكلىthe bereaved mother بِنَوحِwith the wailing of النائِحَهthe mourning woman
A bereaved mother is not content with a mourning woman’s wail.
The bereaved is not satisfied with the wailing of the wailers
