وَرَكبٍand a band of riders كَالنُجومِlike the stars عَلىupon نُجومٍstars
مَرَقنَthey darted forth مِنَfrom الفَلاةِthe wilderness بِهِمcarrying them مُروقاswiftly
And a band of riders, like stars upon stars,
that darted from the wilderness, carrying them swiftly.
سَرَينَthey traveled by night بِهِمcarrying them كَأَنَّهُمas though they نَشاوىdrunk
عَلىupon الأَكوارِthe camel-saddles قَدindeed شَرِبواthey drank رَحيقاpure wine
They bore them through the night, as though the riders were drunk,
upon the camel-saddles, having drunk pure wine.
وَضَوءُand the light الفَجرِdawn مِثلُlike النَهرِthe river جارٍflowing
تَرىyou see بَدرَthe full moon الدُجىthe darkness of night فيهِin it غَريقاdrowned
And the light of dawn flows like a river;
you see night's full moon drowned in it.
تَحُثُّspur onward مَطِيَّناour mounts الأَشواقُthe longings مِنّاfrom us
وَنَقطَعُand we traverse بِالأَحاديثِwith conversation الطَريقاthe road
The longings within us spur our mounts onward,
and we traverse the road with conversation.
