My beloved, the world is desolate when you are gone.

So, my moon, tell me: when will you rise?

Truly, my soul has wasted away in longing for you.

What, then, will you do, my precious soul?

My joy is that you remain well and blessed,

And that is enough of this world for me.

So love is not in vain if I redouble it for you,

Nor are tears wasted if I spend them all for you.

And if someone other than you comes, I do not look

At him; and if he calls, I do not listen.

I am like Moses when his mother cast him forth,

And wet nurses had, of old, been forbidden to him.

    وَإلاّ فَما عُذْرٌ عن الوَصْلِ مانِعُ

    I think my beloved has changed from what I knew him to be;

Otherwise, no excuse stands in the way of reunion.

For he went away angry, and I have not seen him for

Three days; this day is the fourth.

I see that he intends to sever the bond between us,

And he has drawn the sword of his glance, and the sword cuts.

Yet I am indeed patient in the face of this coldness,

Perhaps my beloved will return to me, well pleased.

So if you would be so kind, my messenger, tell him:

Your lover is in straits, and your forbearance is vast.

For, by God, my heart's burning thirst has not been quenched,

Nor have the tears I shed for him run dry.

I humbled myself until my envier's heart softened toward me,

And my reproacher in love became an intercessor.

So do not condemn the submission you have known in me,

For I submit to nothing except love.
