أَياO مَنyou who زادَgrew فيin تيهٍconceit

O you who have gone ever further in your arrogance,
O you who have grown in conceit,
in recklessness and pride,
And in recklessness and pride,
وَمَنand who أَصبَحَhas become لاnot يُلويpays heed
and who have come to heed no one—
And who now pay no heed
neither Zayd nor ʿAmr—
To Zayd or ʿAmr:
أَرىI see عُنوانَa sign أَشياءٍthings
وَماand not يَبعُدُis unlikely أَنthat تَجريthey come to pass
I see signs of things,
I see a sign of things,
and it is not unlikely they will come to pass.
And it is not unlikely that they will come to pass.
مَتىwhen تَصحُyou sober up أُذَكِّركَI will remind you
فَأَنتَfor you اليَومَtoday فيin سُكرِintoxication
Once you are sober, I shall reason with you;
When you sober up, I shall remind you,
for today you are drunk.
For today you are intoxicated.

Alas, how my counsel to him has gone to waste—
So alas for my counsel, wasted on—
how often, in secret and aloud!
You, in private and in public!

And how often I have spoken—but where
And how often I have spoken—but where
is anyone who listens or understands?
Is anyone who listens or understands?
