سَكَنتَyou settled قَلبيmy heart وَفيهِand in it مِنكَfrom you أَسرارُsecrets
فَلتَهنِكَso may it delight you الدارُthe house أَوor فَليَهنِكَso may it delight you الجارُthe neighbor
You have settled in my heart, and within it are secrets from you.
So may the house delight you—or may the neighbor delight you.
ماnot فيهِin it غَيرُكَother than you أَوor سِرٌّa secret عَلِمتَyou knew بِهِof it
وَاِنظُرand look بِعَينَيكَwith your two eyes هَلis there فيin الدارِthe house دَيّارُany dweller
There is nothing in it but you, or a secret you know.
And look with your own eyes: is there any other dweller in the house?
إِنّيindeed I لَأَرضىam surely content with الَّذيwhat تَرضاهُyou approve of it مَنof تَلفيmy ruin
ياO قاتِليmy slayer وَلِماand for whatever تَختارُyou choose أَختارُI choose
Indeed, I am content with whatever ruin you wish for me,
O my slayer—and I choose whatever you choose.
وَيَأنَفُand disdains الغَدرَbetrayal قَلبيmy heart وَهُوَwhile it is مُحتَرِقٌburning
النارُfire وَاللَهِby God فيin هَذاthis وَلاand not العارُdishonor
And my heart disdains betrayal, though it is burning.
In this, by God, fire rather than dishonor!
أَفديI would ransom حَبيباًa beloved هُوَhe is البَدرُthe full moon المُنيرُradiant وَقَدand indeed
تَحَيَّرَتbecame bewildered فيهِby him أَلبابٌminds وَأَبصارُand eyes
I would give my life for a beloved, the radiant full moon; and indeed,
minds and eyes have been bewildered by him.
فيin وَجنَتَيهِhis two cheeks وَحَدِّثand speak عَنهُماof them both عَجَبٌa marvel
ماءٌwater وَنارٌand fire وَلاand no ماءٌwater وَلاand no نارُfire
In his two cheeks—and speak of them—is a marvel:
water and fire, yet neither water nor fire.
ماhow أَطيَبَsweet اللَيلَthe night فيهِin it حينَwhen أَسهَرُهُI spend it awake
كَأَنَّماas though زَفَراتيmy sighs فيهِin it أَسمارُnighttime tales
How sweet the night is when I stay awake through it!
As though my sighs in it were nighttime tales.
وَلَيلَةُand the night الهَجرِof separation إِنif طالَتit lasts long وَإِنand if قَصُرَتit is short
فَمُؤنِسيthen my companion أَمَلٌhope فيهاin it وَتَذكارُand remembrance
And the night of separation, whether long or short—
then my companions in it are hope and remembrance.
لاdo not يَخدَعَنَّكَlet it deceive you مِنهُfrom him طيبُthe sweetness مَنطِقِهِof his speech
فَطالَماfor often لَعِبَتplayed بِالعَقلِwith the mind أَوتارُstrings
Do not let the sweetness of his speech deceive you;
for strings have often played upon the mind.
وَلاand do not يَغُرَّنَكَlet it beguile you مِنهُfrom him حُسنُthe beauty مَنظَرِهِof his appearance
فَقَدfor sometimes يُقالُit is said بِأَنَّthat النَجمَthe star غَرّارُdeceptive
And do not let the beauty of his appearance beguile you;
for it is sometimes said that the star is deceptive.
