سُروريmy joy كانَwas أَنto أَلقاكَI meet you يَوماًone day
لِأَجلِfor the sake of مَحاسِنٍcharms لَكَof yours أَجتَليهاI behold them
My joy was that I might meet you one day,
My joy was to meet you one day,
to behold the beauties that are yours.
To behold the charms that are yours.
فَلَمّاthen when غابَdeparted عَنfrom عَينيmy eye كَراهاits slumber
خَلَتit became empty مِنof ساكِنٍa dweller فَسَكَنتُso I dwelt فيهاin it
But when slumber vanished from my eye,
Then, when slumber left my eye,
it stood empty of a dweller, so I settled within it.
It stood empty of a dweller, so I dwelt within it.
سَأُكرِمُهاI shall honor it لِحُرمَةِout of respect for مَنthe one whom حَوَتهُit held him
وَإِكرامُand honoring الدِيارِthe dwellings لِساكِنيهاfor their inhabitants
I shall honor it for the sanctity of the one it held;
I shall honor it out of respect for the one it held;
for dwellings are honored for the sake of those who dwell in them.
And dwellings are honored for their inhabitants’ sake.
