وَصاحِبٍand a friend أَصبَحَbecame ليto me لائِماًreproachful
لَمّاwhen رَأىhe saw حالَةَthe state of إِفلاسيmy bankruptcy
And a friend began reproaching me
And a friend began reproaching me
When he saw the state of my bankruptcy.
When he saw the state of my bankruptcy.
قُلتُI said لَهُto him إِنّيindeed I اِمرُؤٌa man لَمnot أَزَلI cease
أُفنيI exhaust عَلىon الأَكياسِthe discerning أَكياسيmy purses
I told him, “I am a man who has never ceased
I said to him, "I am a man who has always
Spending my purses on discerning men.
Emptied my purses for the discerning.
ماnot هَذِهِthis أَوَّلَthe first ماwhat مَرَّpassed بيby me
كَمhow many مِثلِهاlike it مَرَّpassed عَلىover راسيmy head
This is not the first such thing to befall me;
This is not the first such thing to befall me;
How many like it have passed over my head!
How many like it have passed over my head!
دَعنيleave me وَماand what أَرضىI choose لِنَفسيfor myself وَماand no
عَلَيكَupon you فيin ذَلِكَthat مِنany باسِharm

Leave me to what I choose for myself; and no
Leave me to what I choose for myself; there is no
Harm will come to you from that.
Harm to you in that.
لَوif نَظَرَlooked الناسُpeople لِأَحوالِهِمto their affairs
لَاشتَغَلَwould be occupied الناسُpeople عَنِaway from الناسِpeople
If people considered their own circumstances,
If people looked to their own affairs,
They would be occupied with themselves, not other people.”
People would be too busy to concern themselves with other people."
