تَعَزَّزَgrew aloof بَعضُone of الناسِthe people فَازدادَand thus increased بَهجَةًradiance
تَعَزَّزَ بَعضُ الناسِ فَازدادَ بَهجَةً
وَزادَand increased فُؤاديmy heart مِنfrom تَباعُدِهِhis withdrawal وَحشاdesolation
وَزادَ فُؤادي مِن تَباعُدِهِ وَحشا
Someone grew aloof and thus became more radiant;
Some people grew closer, so my joy increased
and my heart grew more desolate from his withdrawal.
And my heart grew lonelier from their distance
لِذاكَfor that reason تَرىyou see فيon وَجنَتَيهِhis two cheeks مُسَطَّراًinscribed
لِذاكَ تَرى في وَجنَتَيهِ مُسَطَّراً
إِذاwhen كُوِّرَتit is folded up وَالشَمسُby the sun وَاللَيلُby the night إِذwhen يَغشىit shrouds
إِذا كُوِّرَت وَالشَمسُ وَاللَيلُ إِذ يَغشى
Thus you see inscribed upon his cheeks:
That's why you see written on my cheeks
“When it is folded up,” “By the sun,” and “By the night when it shrouds.”
