وَقائِلَةٍand a woman saying لَمّاwhen أَرَدتُI wished وَداعَهاbidding her farewell
حَبيبيmy beloved أَحَقّاًtruly? أَنتَyou بِالبَينِthrough parting فاجِعيgrieving me
And a woman said, when I wished to bid her farewell:
When I bid her farewell, she said "My love, do you really deserve this separation, so grieve!"
“My beloved, will you truly grieve me by parting?
So Lord, let not what I heard be true,
فَياso O رَبَّLord لاmay not يَصدُقprove true حَديثٌa report سَمِعتُهُI heard it
لَقَدindeed راعَalarmed قَلبيmy heart ماجَرىwhat passed فيthrough مَسامِعيmy ears
So, O Lord, may the news I heard not prove true;
For what reached my ears has disturbed my heart.
what reached my ears has indeed alarmed my heart.”
She stood weeping sadly behind the veil,
وَقامَتand she stood وَراءَbehind السَترِthe curtain تَبكيweeping حَزينَةًsorrowful
وَقَدand already نَقَبَتهُshe pierced it بَينَناbetween us بِالأَصابِعِwith the fingers
And she stood behind the curtain, weeping sorrowfully,
And parted it with her fingers between us.
having pierced it between us with her fingers.
She wept and showed me scattered pearls,
بَكَتshe wept فَأَرَتنيso she showed me لُؤلُؤاًpearls مُتَناثِراًscattered
هَوىfell فَالتَقَتهُthen she caught it فيin فُضولِthe loose ends of المَقانِعِthe veils
She wept, thus showing me scattered pearls,
Falling and meeting the edges of her veil.
which fell, and she caught them in the loose ends of her veils.
When she saw that separation was inevitable,
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَتshe saw أَنّthat الفِراقَparting حَقيقَةٌa reality
وَأَنّيand that I عَلَيهِinto it مُكرَهٌcompelled غَيرُnot طائِعِwilling
Then, when she saw that parting was a certainty,
And I was forced to it, not consenting,
and that I was forced into it against my will,
She appeared - by God the sun was not like her,
تَبَدَّتshe appeared فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God ماnot الشَمسُthe sun مِثلَهاlike her
إِذاwhen أَشرَقَتshone أَنوارُهاits lights فيat المَطالِعِthe places of rising
she came into view—no, by God, the sun is not her equal,
When its lights rise in the horizons.
when its radiance shines at the horizons where it rises.
She bid me farewell with a sign with her right hand,
تُسَلِّمُshe bids farewell بِاليُمنىwith her right hand عَلَيَّto me إِشارَةًa gesture
وَتَمسَحُand she wipes بِاليُسرىwith her left hand مَجاريthe tracks of المَدامِعِtears
She bids me farewell with a gesture of her right hand,
And wiped the streams of tears with her left.
and with her left wipes away the tracks of tears.
She kept weeping and I wept youthfully,
وَماand not بَرِحَتshe ceased تَبكيweeping وَأَبكيand I weep صَبابَةًyearning
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَرَكناwe left الأَرضَthe ground ذاتَpossessing نَقائِعِpools
And she kept weeping, and I wept with longing,
Until we left the land of meadows.
until we left the ground full of pools.
That land will become, from our tears,
سَتُصبِحُwill become تِلكَthat الأَرضُthe ground مِنfrom عَبَراتِناour tears
كَثيرَةَabundant in خِصبٍfertility رائِقِlovely النَبتِthe vegetation رائِعِsplendid
Through our tears, that ground will become
Abundantly fertile, fresh verdant growth.
richly fertile, with lovely, splendid growth.
