كِتابٌa letter أَتانيcame to me مِنfrom حَبيبٍa beloved وَبَينَناand between us
لِطولِbecause of the length of التَنائيbeing far apart بَرزَخٌa barrier أَيُّwhat a بَرزَخِbarrier
A letter came to me from a beloved, while between us
A book came to me from a beloved, though between us
Lay, through our long separation, a barrier—what a barrier!
was a distance - O what a distance!
تَقَدَّمَcame ahead ليto me عَنهُfrom it مِنfrom البُعدِafar أُنسُهُits comforting presence
وَفاحَand wafted إِلَيَّtoward me الطيبُthe fragrance مِنfrom رَأسِthe end of فَرسَخِa league
Its comforting presence reached me ahead of it from afar,
His intimacy advanced toward me from afar
And its fragrance wafted toward me from a league away.
and the fragrance wafted to me from a farsakh away.
كَأَنَّas though نَسيمَthe breeze of الرَوضِthe garden عِندَupon قُدومِهِits arrival
سَرىtraveled by night بِقَميصٍwith a shirt بِالعَبيرِwith perfume المُضَمَّخِdrenched
As though the garden breeze, upon its arrival,
It was as if, when he arrived, the meadow's breeze
Had traveled by night with a shirt drenched in perfume.
flowed in a shirt scented with perfume.
لَقَدindeed بانَbecame apparent مِنfrom تاريخِهِits date فيwithin me هِزَّةٌa thrill
فَقُلso speak فيof كِتابٍa letter بِالسُرورِwith joy مُؤَرَّخِdated
Indeed, from its date a thrill appeared within me;
His elation certainly showed in a tremor -
So speak of a letter dated with joy.
Say, then, in a book dated with joy.
