رَأَيتُكَI saw you لاnot تَدومُyou remain constant عَلىin وِدادٍaffection
فَتَصرِمُso you sever حَبلَthe cord خِنٍa friend (probable intended meaning) بَعدَafter خِدنِa friend
I have seen that you are not constant in affection,
I saw you never faithful in affection
So you sever the bond with friend after friend.
So you cut the rope of love after intimacy
تُجَدِّدُyou renew صَبوَةًan infatuation فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday
وَتَسكَرُand you become drunk سَكرَةًa bout of drunkenness مِنfrom كُلِّevery دَنِّwine jar
You renew your infatuation every day,
You renew a passion every day
And grow drunk from every wine jar.
And get drunk with fervor from every coquette
أَقولُI speak الحَقَّthe truth مالَكَyou do not have مِنany صَديقٍfriend
فَلاso do not تَعتُبfind fault عَلَيَّwith me وَلاand do not تَلُمنيblame me
I speak the truth: you have no friend,
I speak the truth; you have no loyal friend
So do not find fault with me, and do not blame me.
So do not blame me or find fault with me
وَكُنتُand I was أَظُنُّI think أَنَّكَthat you ليto me حَبيبٌa beloved
وَقَدand indeed خَيَّبتَyou disappointed بِالتَقبيحِby disparagement ظَنّيmy expectation
And I thought you were my beloved,
I thought you were a lover to me
Yet by disparagement you have dashed my expectation.
But you have disappointed my hopes by your vileness
فَماso ... not اِستَحيَيتَyou felt shame إِذwhen نَظَرَتكَit beheld you عَينيmy eye
وَلاand not خَفَّضتَyou lowered your voice إِذwhen سَمِعَتكَit heard you أُذنيmy ear
You felt no shame when my eye beheld you,
You felt no shame when my eyes looked at you
Nor did you lower your voice when my ear heard you.
Nor were abashed when my ears heard you
لَقَدindeed نَقَلَconveyed الوُشاةُthe slanderers إِلَيكَto you زوراًfalsehood
وَنالواand they attained مِنكَfrom you قَصدُهُمtheir aim وَمِنّيand from me
The slanderers have indeed brought you falsehood,
Indeed, the slanderers have falsely accused me to you
And got what they wanted from you and from me.
And got their purpose of you and of me
نَصَحتُكَI advised you لَوif صَحَوتَyou sobered up قَبِلتَyou would have accepted نُصحيmy advice
وَلَكِنand yet أَنتَyou فيin سُكرِdrunkenness التَجَنّيgroundless reproach
I advised you; had you sobered up, you would have accepted my advice.
I advised you; if you were sober, you would accept my advice
And yet you are drunk on groundless reproach.
But you are drunk with wilfulness
وَمَنand whoever سَمِعَhears الغِناءَsinging بِغَيرِwithout قَلبٍa heart
وَلَمand did not يَطرَبfeel rapture فَلاthen let him not يَلُمِblame المُغَنّيthe singer
And whoever hears singing without a heart,
He who listens to singing without feeling
And feels no rapture, should not blame the singer.
Should not blame the singer
