O you who are absent from my sight,

No one but you crosses my mind.

I know the loneliness you feel,

And I feel as much, or more.

And I have a heart that never turns away from you,

And I have a tongue that never tires of speaking of you.

Among people, one like you is the beloved who

Is remembered, or praised, or thanked.

And whenever a north wind blows,

I ask it about you and seek news.

How sweet a wind it is when it wafts by night,

And how sweet what it recounts and what it mentions!

From its fragrant breaths I discern

    A message about you—ambergris itself.
