قَدindeed راحَwent رَسوليmy messenger وَكماand just as راحَhe went أَتىhe returned
قَد راحَ رَسولي وَكما راحَ أَتى
بِاللَهِby God مَتىwhen نَقَضتُمُyou broke العَهدَthe pledge مَتىwhen
بِاللَهِ مَتى نَقَضتُمُ العَهدَ مَتى
My messenger went and returned just as he had gone.
My messenger left, as he left he came
By God, when did you break the pledge—when?
By God, when did you break the covenant, when
ماnot ذاthis ظَنّيmy expectation بِكُمof you وَماand not ذاthis أَمَليmy hope
ما ذا ظَنّي بِكُم وَما ذا أَمَلي
قَدindeed أَدرَكَattained فيin me سُؤلَهُhis wish مَنhe who شَمِتاgloated
قَد أَدرَكَ في سُؤلَهُ مَن شَمِتا
This is not what I expected of you, nor what I hoped for.
What do I think of you and what is my hope
He who gloated has attained his wish at my expense.
He who rejoiced in his question has known
