إِنَّindeed أَمريmy situation لَعَجيبٌtruly strange
لاnot يُرىis seen أَعجَبُstranger مِنهُthan it
Indeed, my situation is truly strange;
My matter is strange,
Nothing stranger than it is seen.
Nothing stranger can be seen,
كُلُّevery أَرضٍland لِيَfor me فيهاin it
غائِبٌsomeone absent أَسأَلُI ask عَنهُabout him
In every land I have
In every land there is for me,
Someone absent whom I ask about.
One who is absent whom I ask after,
أَينَwhere مَنthe one who يَشكوcomplains مِنَof البَيthe separa-
نِ-tion (completing ‘separation’) الَّذيthat أَشكوهُI complain of it مِنهُfrom him
Where is the one who laments the separa-
Where is the one who complains of separation
tion that I lament because of him?
From the one from whom I complain of separation?
