هَل رَأَيتُم هَل سَمِعتُم هَل عُهِد
Tell of the length of a night I spent.
Tell of the length of a gloomy night
Have you seen, have you heard, has such a thing ever been known?

لاmay not رَعاهُwatch over it اللَهُGod ماhow أَطوَلَهُlong it is
لا رَعاهُ اللَهُ ما أَطوَلَهُ
تَحبَلَُconceives المَرأَةُthe woman فيهِin it وَتَلِدand gives birth
تَحبَلَُ المَرأَةُ فيهِ وَتَلِد
May God not watch over it—how long it is!
May God not favor it, how lengthy it is
A woman conceives in it and gives birth.
In it a woman conceives and gives birth
لَيسَis not ماwhat أَشكوهُI complain of it مِنهُof it واحِداًone thing
لَيسَ ما أَشكوهُ مِنهُ واحِداً
كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing مَرَّhappened بيto me فيهِin it نَكِدdistressing
كُلُّ شَيءٍ مَرَّ بي فيهِ نَكِد
What I complain of in it is not just one thing.
My complaints about it are not just one
Everything that happened to me in it was distressing.
